CALLING INVISIBLE WOMEN
CALLING INVISIBLE WOMEN
BY JEANNE RAY
ABOUT THE BOOK:
A delightfully funny novel packing a clever punch, from the author of the New York Times bestselling Julie and Romeo
A mom in her early fifties, Clover knows she no longer turns heads the way she used to, and she's only really missed when dinner isn't on the table on time. Then Clover wakes up one morning to discover she's invisible--truly invisible. She panics, but when her husband and son sit down to dinner, nothing is amiss. Even though she's been with her husband, Arthur, since college, her condition goes unnoticed. Her friend Gilda immediately observes that Clover is invisible, which relieves Clover immensely--she's not losing her mind after all!--but she is crushed by the realization that neither her husband nor her children ever truly look at her. She was invisible even before she knew she was invisible.
Clover discovers that there are other women like her, women of a certain age who seem to have disappeared. As she uses her invisibility to get to know her family and her town better, Clover leads the way in helping invisible women become recognized and appreciated no matter what their role. Smart and hilarious, with indomitable female characters, Calling Invisible Women will appeal to anyone who has ever felt invisible.
PRAISE FOR CALLING INVISIBLE WOMEN AND JEANNE RAY'S WRITING:

“Women of a certain age will devour Ray’s sly satire on the perils of big pharma, middle age, and the unseen consequences of living the quiet life.” –Booklist
“Offers a lot of witty charm.” –Kirkus
“Jeanne Ray is truly wise and funny about family, friendship, and love—about the ways in which we see (and don’t see) each other. Calling Invisible Women is an utter delight.” –Hilma Wolitzer

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Nashville author Jeanne Ray has redefined life after 60, for herself and her readers. At an age when most people start thinking of retirement, Ray launched a second career writing endearing comedies about the angst filled love lives of the senior set. Yes, Ray says, grandma and grandpa can still kick up their heels and fall in love.
Jeanne's first novel, Julie and Romeo (2000), has sold some 480,000 copies and was optioned for film by Barbra Streisand. Her second book, Step-Ball-Change (2002), breathes new life into the "old married couple" misconception. Her novel, Eat Cake (2003), humorously presents the conflicts between elderly parents and sullen teens.
Jeanne Ray shook up her own status quo when her writing unexpectedly blossomed into a full time career. After 45 years as a nurse, the timing seemed right to turn her "little joy time" activity into a serious pursuit: she was in a secure relationship, the kids were grown, and she had finally found a topic that motivated her. Sharing her writing was frightening, but Ray had a little help from daughter Ann Patchett, who happens to be the author of such acclaimed novels as Bel Canto and The Magician's Assistant.
Jeanne Ray still works as a registered nurse at the First Clinic in Nashville, Tennessee. She is married and has two daughters. Together, she and her husband have ten grandchildren. If Ray gets tired of writing, she says she might take up tap dancing as a third career.

I especially like the Library Journal praise, because it is witty and alludes to the title of the novel. But I also thought that Alison McGhee's praise was very well-suited, and would make me want to pick up the book as well :)

It sounds wonderful. I am sure we have all felt this way. I know my son and DIL would only notice I wasn't here if the bills went unpaid. But then again, they may not even notice that...that would require getting and opening the mail.
