INDISCRETION: A REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

GIVEAWAY ENDED
INDISCRETION
 BY CHARLES DUBOW

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Harry and Madeleine Winslow have been blessed with talent, money, and charm. Harry is a National Book Award-winning author on the cusp of greatness. Bonded by deep devotion, they share a love that is both envied and adored.

One weekend at the start of the summer season, Harry and Maddy, who are in their early forties, meet Claire and cannot help but be enchanted by her winsome youth, quiet intelligence, and disarming naivety. Drawn by the Winslows' indescribable magnetism, Claire eagerly falls into their welcoming orbit. But over the course of the summer, reverence transforms into dangerous desire. By Labor Day, it is no longer enough to just be one of their hangers-on.

A story of love, lust, deception, and betrayal told through the omniscient eyes of Maddy's childhood friend Walter, a narrator akin to Nick Carraway in The Great Gatsby, Indiscretion is a juicy, deeply textured novel filled with fascinating true-to-life characters-an irresistibly sensual page-turner that explores having it all, and the consequences of wanting more.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Charles Dubow was born in New York City and spent his summers at his family's house on Georgica Pond in East Hampton. He was educated at Wesleyan University and New York University. He has worked as a roustabout, a lumberjack, a sheepherder in New Zealand, and a congressional aide, and was a founding editor of Forbes.com and later an editor at Businessweek.com. He lives in New York City with his wife, Melinda; children, William and Lally; and Labrador retriever, Luke. This is his first novel.

MY THOUGHTS/REVIEW:
Harry and Madeleine Winslow are a perfect couple from what everyone can tell. He, an author, and Madeleine with her own money, run among the privileged set in New York City, and are envied by many. They exude happiness and share their love of life with their many friends, especially while spending summers in the Hamptons. Madeleine is a gracious and gorgeous hostess whose talent in the kitchen is one she enjoys sharing with friends. Harry’s genius as an author is evidenced not only by his popularity but also by the many prizes for his work.

Enter Claire who readers meet at one of the Winslow’s parties. She is quite taken by both of these fabulous, sociable people and becomes one of their close knit group of friends rather quickly.

Madeleine’s friend, Walter, is also a member of their crowd and is, in fact, the narrator of the story. His narration really adds to the story in a positive way. The story winds around the reader until you feel that you also are part of this group and thus find it hard to dislike any of them, nor to believe what happens as the story goes on. I felt I could see where things were leading but found I actually had no idea that they would go where they went. INDISCRETION held my interest from the first page and was a fun read because of that.

Author Charles Dubow has written a spellbinding narrative that could have been an commonplace tale of adultery but in Dubow’s hands, is much more than that! By using the Madeleine’s friend Walter Gervais as the narrator, the story draws the reader in to be sympathetic to each of the players in one way or another. It is hard to dislike any of them for most of the story. Dubow’s characters are so skillfully developed that they bring out empathy in the reader. I believe that one might not have felt this way had there been some outrageous ending with unreal characters. Instead, Dubrow plays on our emotions and does it with such simple grace that when the ending is realized, it hits the reader that much harder. INDISCRETION is an emotional ride that leaves you satisfied, while also shocked, as well as wanting more.
