ABOUT THE BOOK:
If kids get hooked on Magic Tree House, they're hooked on reading!
This is one series that kids, teachers, librarians, and parents all
agree on. A perfect blend of magic, adventure, history, science, danger,
and cuteness--the topics range from kid pleasers
(pirates, the Titanic, pandas) to curriculum perfect (rain
forest, American Revolution, Abraham Lincoln) to seasonal shoe-ins
(Halloween, Christmas, Thanksgiving).
Magic Tree House #49 features Jack
and Annie heading back to ancient Greece and an adventure
with Alexander the Great when he was a child and his famous stallion:
Bucephalus.
AN EXCERPT FROM STALLION BY STARLIGHT:
The Magic Tree House series is still the foremost series to go to for budding young readers!

MY THOUGHTS/REVIEW:
In this latest "Magic Tree House" book by Mary Pope Osborne, familiar characters Jack and Annie are magically carried back to Macedonia, in Ancient Greece. Their mission is supposedly to find young Alexander, the Great, with help from Merlin's magic ring. The story quickly centers on Alexander’s very famous horse, Bucephalus. In the story, the famous stallion is tamed by Jack, not Alexander. With Annie’s help, Jack trains Bucephalus for the prince.
Historically, 12-year old Alexander won the horse when a horse dealer offered the horse to Alexander's father, Philip II. However, since it seemed that nobody could tame the animal, Philip wasn't interested, but Alexander was! He asked for the chance to tame the horse and if he did, he promised that he would then pay for it. Alexander was given the chance to tame Bucephalus and did so by talking calmly to the horse while turning him so he wouldn’t see its shadow. Evidently, the shadow is what bothered the horse, and so from that, Alexander won the horse that he loved so much that when the horse died, he named a city after him, calling it Bucephala.
With Mary Pope Osborne’s “Magic Tree House” fictional version, children will become interested in this period and can go on to read more factual accounts of what is known about this time period, Alexander the Great, and his horse, Bucephalus.

I think lots of kids really like horses so I think this book would be of great interest to them. I don't have any children or grandchildren but would love to give this book to our local library that is hurting for funds this year. They have a great children's program.
