ARE YOU LISTENING? STARTING NOW by DEBBIE MACOMBER: A REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

WELCOME TO BOOKIN' WITH BINGO'S"
ARE YOU LISTENING? DAY"
I AM EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE TODAY'S
AUDIO BOOK CHOICE....
GIVEAWAY ENDED
STARTING NOW
A Blossom Street Novel
BY DEBBIE MACOMBER
Read by Abby Craden
ABOUT THE BOOK:
For years Libby Morgan dreamed only of making partner in her competitive, high-pressure law firm. She sacrificed everything for her career—her friends, her marriage, her chance at creating a family. When her boss calls Libby into his office, she assumes it will finally be good news, but nothing can prepare her for the shocking reality: She’s been let go and must rebuild her entire life . . . starting now.

With no job prospects in sight, Libby reaches out to old friends and spends her afternoons at A Good Yarn, the local knitting store. There she forms a close bond with Lydia, the sweet-natured shop owner; Lydia’s spirited teenage daughter, Casey; and Casey’s best friend, Ava, a shy yet troubled girl who will shape Libby’s future in surprising and profound ways.

As A Good Yarn becomes a second home—and the women a new kind of family—Libby relishes the different person she’s become. She even finds time for romance with a charming and handsome doctor who seems to be her perfect match. But just as everything is coming together, Libby must make a choice that could forever change the life she holds so dear.

Warmly told and richly textured, Starting Now is filled with the promise of new beginnings and the unending delights of companionship and love.

EXCERPT FROM STARTING NOW:
This was it. Surely it must be.

The instant Libby Morgan heard her paralegal tell her “Hershel would like to see you in his office,” she knew. Oh, there’d been rumblings around the office about layoffs and early retirements. Such gossip simply verified what she felt in her heart Hershel was sure to tell her. She’d waited for this moment for six very long years.

Libby had always wondered how she’d feel when she finally got the news. She longed to hold on to this sense of happy expectation for as long as possible. In retrospect, she must have intuitively known something was up because she’d worn her best pin-striped suit today, choosing the pencil skirt over her normal tailored slacks. And thankfully she’d had a salon appointment just the day before. Getting her hair cut was long overdue, but seeing how good it looked now, she felt it was worth every penny of the hundred dollars Jacques had charged her. A good cut did wonders for her appearance. She wore her dark brown hair parted in the middle in an inverted bob so that it framed her face, curling around her jawline. Jacques had mentioned more than once how fortunate she was to have such thick hair. She hadn’t felt that way when he’d insisted she have her eyebrows plucked. But he’d been right; she looked good. Polished. Professional. She promised herself not to go so long between appointments again.

Libby didn’t see herself as any great beauty. She was far too realistic and sensible, was well aware of her physical shortcomings. At best she was pretty, or at least Joe, her ex-husband, had told her she was.

MY THOUGHTS/REVIEW:
STARTING NOW is Debbie Macomber’s latest addition to her popular Blossom Street series. Even without having read any of the other books in the series, STARTING NOW is still easy to get into right away, thus showing that it stands on its own very well. Traditional Macomber characters captivate readers with their warmth and their relatable problems.

The protagonist is Libby Morgan, a lawyer with her firm for six years and on track, she thinks, to become a partner. Her life revolves around her career as she dedicates herself totally to this job. One day when she is called to her boss’s office, Libby tries to stay calm as she anticipates an offer of a partnership. However, what Libby receives is the complete opposite - a pink slip. Not bringing in enough big money accounts is the reason she is given for her dismissal.

Libby is devastated and feels even more defeated as she is unable to find another job. At this point, the main part of the story really takes off. Libby visits a quaint knitting shop, A Good Yarn, and makes friends there that will lead her to the next, and most important stage of her life. With these friends and no lawyer jobs in sight, Libby becomes involved in activities she never thought she would be part of. As a volunteer, Libby knits newborn baby caps, and rocks the babies in the NICU at the local hospital. It is here that the love interest in the story enters. Also, her friend Casey brings Eva into Libby’s life and that friendship is a major factor in the direction Libby’s path will take.

How Libby deals with this huge change in her life gives readers the warm and enchanting characters that bring Libby to a new life filled with hope and inspiration, a common trademark of Debbie Macomber’s stories. STARTING NOW is a quick read and one that will raise you up if you are down, as well as entertain. If this is your first Debbie Macomber book, I can promise you it won’t be your last! Enjoy!

This book would be good for me to listen to at this point in my life. I've worked since I turned 14--and work is so important in defining who I am. Now I'm planning to retire next year---and I'm not sure how I will handle life after work.
