INFERNO
Read by Paul Michael
BY DAN BROWN
REMINDER ABOUT THE BOOK:
In his international blockbusters The Da Vinci Code, Angels & Demons, and The Lost Symbol, Dan Brown masterfully fused history, art, codes, and symbols. In this riveting new thriller, Brown returns to his element and has crafted his highest-stakes novel to date.

In the heart of Italy, Harvard professor of symbology Robert Langdon is drawn into a harrowing world centered on one of history’s most enduring and mysterious literary masterpieces . . . Dante’s Inferno.

Against this backdrop, Langdon battles a chilling adversary and grapples with an ingenious riddle that pulls him into a landscape of classic art, secret passageways, and futuristic science. Drawing from Dante’s dark epic poem, Langdon races to find answers and decide whom to trust . . . before the world is irrevocably altered.
REMINDER ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Dan Brown is the author of numerous #1 bestselling novels, including the recent record-breaking The Lost Symbol, which had the biggest one-week sale in Random House history for a single title.  His previous title, The Da Vinci Code, has sold more than 80 million copies worldwide, making it one of the bestselling novels of all time. In addition to numerous appearances on The Today Show, Mr. Brown was named one of the World's 100 Most Influential People by Time Magazine. He has appeared in the pages of Newsweek, Forbes, People, GQ, The New Yorker, and others. His novels are published in over 50 languages around the world. MY THOUGHTS/REVIEW:
Dan Brown’s INFERNO is just what I had hoped for over the long months as I waited for its release.  It is a fast-paced thriller filled with enough action to keep one turning pages, or listening, as well as a great deal of persuasive history woven into the mystery. INFERNO begins with Harvard professor and symbologist, Robert Langdon, waking up in a hospital room in Florence, Italy, with an apparent bullet wound to his head, but no memory of how he got there. But these first quiet moments are interrupted when it appears that the shooter has come back to finish the job! From that point on, with the help of  Sienna Brooks, the doctor who was treating him, the chase begins.

As the story progresses, Langdon has minor flashes of memories but none of them make sense. With Sienna’s help, Langdon tries to find out what happened in those missing hours that his amnesia seems to have stolen from him. He also wants to know why he has become some kind of target and what he may have done to start this whole thing.

They first hide out at Sienna’s apartment in order to contact Langdon’s embassy for help and it is there that he discovers inside his trademark Harris Tweed jacket an ancient cylinder. On it, Langdon is able to decipher a frightening message based on Dante’s Inferno.

Dr. Elizabeth Sinskey, the head of the global World Health Organization, enters INFERNO as she is trying to figure out why Bertrand Zobrist jumped to his death in Florence. Zobrist, it seems, was a genius scientist and supporter of Transhumanism. His research had proven that Earth’s natural resources would not be enough to handle the population growth and the human race would be gone within 100 years if something wasn’t done right away. He’s also a close student of Dante, and thus the reason Langdon must decipher clues from The Divine Comedy to solve this mystery. It is because of this, that Dr. Sinskey and Professor Langdon meet in order to work together to stop Zobrist’s plan. Langdon finds himself in a race against time to find what turns out to be a well hidden creation that could very well result in the end the human race.

Set mainly in the city of Florence, this electrifying narrative contains a great deal of well-researched history of the arts, architecture and literature which are Dan Brown‘s specialty. While many reviews I read put down Brown for his writing skills and formulaic novels, I strongly disagree. For most readers, this is exactly what we want. A book that keep us on the edge of our seat with excitement as well as a solid background, which in this case is based especially on art and literary history. INFERNO’s literary background is enriching but blended into the story so well that it does not feel like the reader is being lectured to. In addition, the scientific research
in INFERNO is a bit of a change but one that is logically explained as it is revealed, and so adds to the overall interest and expectation of the story.

In my opinion, Dan Brown is one of the best at adding twists and turns to his stories. INFERNO, not only does this through the streets of Europe, but also in the plot. I even found that not all the characters turn out to be what we think and that is always a marvelous, albeit frustrating, surprise. INFERNO ends with a great deal of excitement so that readers are eager to question the possibility of such an event as well as to discuss the book with friends. Highly recommend for everyone and especially book clubs!

I like that it is a fast paced thriller and that there are historical aspects involved in the story. I never know how much is real in his stories. I come away believing it could happen.

I like what your answer to the critics about Dan Brown writing formulitic books. I have read several books from series that could be construed as that but they never come up short on action and historical details. I also love twists and turns in stories.
