Normally Melanie Cooper and Angie DeLaura wouldn’t be caught dead at a beauty pageant, but when Mel’s mom asks them to provide cupcakes for the seventy-fifth annual Sweet Tiara contest as a favor for her best friend, they can’t say no. Plus, between cooking up a daily display for the three-day event and sponsoring a cupcake creation challenge for the participants, Fairy Tale Cupcakes will get great publicity.

But the world of pageants is even hotter than Mel’s kitchen. A high-strung judge and a pushy stage mom target Lupe, a young friend of Mel and Angie’s, at the competition and aim to take her out—by any means necessary. When the same judge shows up dead underneath Mel and Angie’s cupcake display, Lupe is crowned the lead suspect. Now Mel and Angie will have to find the real killer quickly or Lupe may be strutting the catwalk in prison pinstripes... 

AN EXCERPT FROM SUGAR AND ICED:
Chapter One

“We need to have a staff meeting,” Angie DeLaura said. “Stat.”
 
She was standing in front of the bakery’s large picture window, which looked onto the street. Then she began making retching noises.
 
Melanie Cooper glanced up from the glass display counter that she was loading with the specialty item of the day at Fairy Tale Cupcakes, salted caramel cupcakes. The moist caramel cake frosted with salted dulce de leche icing and drizzled with caramel had become a favorite among the Old Town Scottsdale tourists and regulars alike.
 
“Why?” Melanie asked. “What’s going on?”
 
“Marty and Olivia,” Angie said. She tossed her long brunette braid over her shoulder as she turned to face Mel. Her curled lip and wrinkled nose made it clear what she thought about the new couple.
 
“Oh,” Mel said. “Give it time.”
 
“Time?” Angie cried. “They’ve had months. I’m telling you we need to have an intervention.”
 
“I thought you wanted a staff meeting,” Mel said.
“Yes, a staff meeting which is a code word for an intervention,” Angie said, making quotation marks in the air with her fingers.
Mel put the last cupcake in the display case and straightened up. She kept her blonde hair short in the back but long on top and had to blow her bangs out of her eyes so she could meet Angie’s gaze across the bakery.

Jenn McKinlay is what is known as a dessert-freakosaurus. She has been known to eat leftover birthday cake for breakfast, lunch and dinner and the frozen top tier of her wedding cake didn’t stand a chance of seeing its first anniversary. Luckily, her husband is more of a salt guy. Since the arrival of the hooligans (her sons), she has honed her culinary skills to include cupcakes and has baked and frosted cupcakes into the shape of cats, mice and outerspace aliens to name just a few. Writing a mystery series based upon one of her favorite food groups (cupcakes) is as enjoyable as licking the beater and she can’t wait to whip up the next one. She is the author of another mystery series under the name Lucy Lawrence and lives in Scottsdale, Arizona with her musician husband Chris, their two sons, two cats, one dog and one fish.
