Billie Breslin has travelled far from her California home to take a job at Delicious, the most iconic food magazine in New York and, thus, the world. Lulu's letters lead Billie to a deeper understanding of history (and the history of food), but most important, Lulu's courage in the face of loss inspires Billie to come to terms with her own issues--the panic attacks that occur every time she even thinks about cooking, the truth about the big sister she adored, and her ability to open her heart to love.

When I first read about DELICIOUS by Ruth Reichl I knew I would love the book and couldn't wait for it to come out. I was not disappointed! With Reichl's background as a food writer, reviewer and more, the authenticity of all parts of the story draw readers into the world she writes about. Billie (Wilhelmina) Breslin has come to New York to make her mark somehow in the food world. Although she possesses an extremely talented palate which is so interesting and well written about, she is too nervous to be a chef. And so she starts out by taking a job at the premier foodie magazine named Delicious.
As the characters Reichl creates come to life, you feel like you are in the office, kitchens, and restaurants they occupy. When things seem to be too good to be true, alas, they are and the story within this story begins. Delicious closes down suddenly and Billie takes on the job of minding the house and call center in a "clean up the place" type of job. When she discovers a hidden room in the library of the building, her world is turned upside down. Within it, she finds letters from a young girl to none other than James Beard, the legendary chef by which all chefs are measured today. These letters are precious to Billie and the story they tell makes DELICIOUS even more meaty than one may have thought from the beginning. Foodies and readers who enjoy a well-written, fascinating narrative will enjoy Ruth Reichl's DELICIOUS as well as the included gingerbread recipe she shared. More surprises and treats are packed in this novel so don't shy away from it as you will be missing a yummy read!
