MY THOUGHTS/REVIEW:
In best selling author Anne Rivers Siddons latest novel, THE GIRLS OF AUGUST, readers will immediately be drawn into the lives of four women who become friends while their husbands are attending medical school. With so much in common, it didn't take long for Maddy, Barbara, Melinda, and Rachel to bond and so begins a story that covers decades of the relationship between these women. They share the ups and downs, the happy and sad, and all the emotions that go into the lives of these "girls". As time moves on, they decide to spend a week at the beach each year, no matter what is going on in their lives, or where they are, so they can catch up and keep their friendship alive and fresh. Their time at the oceanfront escape is one they hold dear, filled with fun and excitement at first, and maturing as years go by. However, as the yearly meetings go on, tragedy strikes this group and the loss of one of the quartet leads to apathy and doubts about how long this tradition will, and should, go on. 

Siddons wisely moves the narrative along by drawing readers into the lives of each of these well-developed characters, and by injecting some new players into the picture, readers are hooked. Theirs is an extraordinary bond and thus only natural to want to see where the new member will take them. Will she fit in? Will they allow her to fill the void left when their friend died? How will the beautifully drawn setting and local inhabitants play a part in the story of these women? Wanting to see where this takes THE GIRLS OF AUGUST makes for a memorable and enchanting read. When the last page is turned, Anne Rivers Siddons leaves readers with characters you care about and think of long after the book is closed, or the audio turned off.
