THE FIRST FAMILY DETAIL:
Secret Service Agents Reveal
the Hidden Lives of the Presidents
Read by Michael Bybee
BY RONALD KESSLER

ABOUT THE AUDIO BOOK:
As in a play, presidents, vice presidents, and presidential candidates perform on stage for the public and the media. What the nation’s leaders are really like and what goes on behind the scenes remains hidden. Secret Service agents have a front row seat on their private lives and those of their wives and children.

Crammed with new, headline-making revelations, THE FIRST FAMILY DETAIL: Secret Service Agents Reveal the Hidden Lives of the Presidents by Ronald Kessler tells that eye-opening, uncensored story.

Since publication of his New York Times bestselling book In the President’s Secret Service, award-winning investigative reporter Ronald Kessler has continued to penetrate the wall of secrecy that surrounds the U.S. Secret Service, breaking the story that Secret Service agents who were to protect President Obama hired prostitutes in Cartagena, Colombia and revealing that the Secret Service allowed a third uninvited guest to crash a White House state dinner.

Now in this new book, Kessler presents far bigger and more consequential stories about our nation’s leaders and the agency sworn to protect them. Kessler widens his scope to include presidential candidates and former presidents after they leave the White House. In particular, he focuses on first ladies and their children and their relationships with the presidents.

From observing Vice President Joe Biden’s reckless behavior that jeopardizes the country’s safety, to escorting Bill Clinton’s blond mistress at Chappaqua, to overhearing First Lady Michelle Obama’s admonitions to the president, to witnessing President Nixon’s friends bring him a nude stripper, to seeing their own agency take risks that could result in an assassination, Secret Service agents know a secret world that Ronald Kessler exposes in breathtaking detail.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
RONALD KESSLER is the New York Times bestselling author of The Terrorist Watch, The Bureau, Inside the White House, and The CIA at War. A former reporter for the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal, he has won sixteen journalism awards. Kessler lives in Potomac, Maryland, with his wife, Pamela.

MY THOUGHTS/REVIEW:
THE FIRST FAMILY DETAIL: Secret Service Agents Reveal the Hidden Lives of the Presidents by Ronald Kessler is a different audio book from what I usually read but I have always been fascinated by the Secret Service and wondered if reading THE FIRST FAMILY DETAIL might enlighten me. I found this non-fiction book was easier to read than I thought plus it did indeed reveal more about the Secret Service. I found out how they work to protect our officials including the President and the First Family. Some of it I already knew but there were also some things they do that I hadn't known about.

The book also told about Presidents and things that the public doesn't see. In that respect, some were things I had heard about but other things were humorous, some shocking, and some really sad to me. I must be so naive but did somewhat think that by revealing things about the Presidents and their families made me question the Secret Service's loyalty. At times, it was like reading a gossip newspaper as there were so many anonymous sources. If someone is going to tell us what a President did with whom, I think the person telling the tale should be up front about it. That said, I still went on to read it and figured I would take it all with a grain of salt. Sadly, however, true or not, once written, it is as good as true for those who read it.

Some of the other information was interesting and gave good insight into the kind of man the President was that they were talking about. The book also tells about how and why the Secret Service was created and also how many of the agents are treated. Some of that part was sad and surprising. If you were the President and someone is ready to take a bullet for you, I would think you would be indebted and would treat them really well. As I said, I must be really naive as that is not always the case. I think that overall THE FIRST FAMILY DETAIL is worth listening to, or reading...especially if our government and how it is run is of interest to you.

I agree that all the anonymous sources might make it read like a gossip newspaper. I'm not sure I would want to know all these details!

I am very disappointed that this book has so much gossip in it. Isn't the Secret Service's creation, history and qualification interesting enough without adding pulp? When a person hires in as a federal government employee, you go through a background check. That fact alone makes me think that a good deal of this book is not based on interviews with Sercret Secrive people but instead of the result of collection of rumors.

I'd like to know more about the Secret Service and what they do. Gossip is gossip. I'm sure we have already hard some of it anyway. That, as you said, you take with a grain of salt.

This sounds fascinating. It strikes me as sad though that the First Family essentially has no privacy.

I think this would be a very interesting read. I've always been curious about the Secret Service and wondered what they see and hear. I find it sad though that 'money talks'so to speak; that someone is willing to spill it for money. I guess though if they are treated badly why should they honor that privacy?
