THE DARLING DAHLIAS ANDTHE SILVER DOLLAR BUSH
A Darling Dahlias Mystery
BY SUSAN WITTIG ALBERT
ABOUT THE BOOK:
National bestselling author Susan Wittig Albert takes readers back in time to small-town Darling, Alabama, in the 1930s—where the Darling Savings and Trust has just closed and the women of the Darling Dahlias’ garden club are betting their bottom dollar there’s going to be trouble…
It’s the spring of 1933 and times are tough all over. The only businessman not struggling is moonshiner Mickey LeDoux, though he still has to steer clear of federal agents. But banks are closing all over the country, and the small town of Darling is no exception. Folks are suddenly caught short on cash and everyone is in a panic.
Desperate to avoid disaster, several town leaders—including Alvin Duffy, the bank’s new vice president—hatch a plan to print Darling Dollars on newspaperman Charlie Dickens’ printing press. The “funny money” can serve as temporary currency so the town can function. But when the first printing of the scrip disappears, the Darling Dahlias set out to discover who made an unauthorized withdrawal.
Meanwhile County Treasurer Verna Tidwell questions whether she can trust Alvin Duffy—and the feelings he stirs up inside her. And Liz Lacy learns her longtime beau may be forced into a shotgun wedding. Seems other troubles don’t just go away when there’s a crisis. There’ll be no pennies from heaven, but if anyone can balance things out, folks can bank on the Darling Dahlias…
Includes Southern-Style Depression-Era Recipes

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Born in Chicago on January 2, 1940, and raised on an Illinois farm, Albert got married at the age of eighteen. Despite the challenge of being a young mother raising three children born fairly close together, Albert was determined to get her college degree. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Illinois, and earned a Ph.D. in English from the University of California at Berkeley in just four years.
Her first job, in 1972, was an Associate Professor of English at the University of Texas at Austin. In 1979, she became the first woman dean of Newcomb College at Tulane University in New Orleans and in 1981, she returned to Texas and became Vice President of Academic Affairs at Southwest Texas State in San Marcos. Four years later, however, she abandoned her thriving career to make some major life changes. Having become thoroughly fed up with academic politics, she quit and decided to find a better way to live her life.
One change was her marriage, in 1986, to Bill Albert, a computer systems analyst who would become not only her husband, but also her partner in many other pursuits—most importantly, in her writing. Moving to Texas, the Alberts started off by collaborating on 60-plus young adult novels, including books in the Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys series.
Robin Paige is the pseudonym of husband-and-wife writing team Susan Wittig Albert and Bill Albert. Susan Wittig Albert is also the author of the China Bayles mysteries. Bill Albert is the co-author, with his wife, of more than sixty novels for young adults. They live in the Texas hill country.

I love that it's set in 1933.

1933, I have no idea of what it was like in the South. My mother's family were poor farmers and they didn't feel the Depression at all but they had food and house to live in. My father's family lived in the city. they ate a lot of flour and water! My father hopped on trains to work and send his mother money to survive on. So what was it like in the South?

My mom was still young in the early 30s but she really never spoke of the depression era other than to tell me about the wages they made when she went to work and her fun jobs like plucking chickens. I'd love to read this book and learn more.

After checking the left side of the Albert's website, I discovered a link to Bill Albert's site that tells us about his passion for woodturning and his interest in antique tools. Plus...the pic shows him wearing a camo shirt which indicates to me that he's into atleast a bit of bush craft. That's awesome!
