FLESH AND BLOOD: A REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

GIVEAWAY ENDED
FLESH AND BLOOD
BY PATRICIA CORNWELL

ABOUT THE BOOK:
It’s Dr. Kay Scarpetta’s birthday, and she’s about to head to Miami for a vacation with Benton Wesley, her FBI profiler husband, when she notices seven pennies on a wall behind their Cambridge house. Is this a kids’ game? If so, why are all of the coins dated 1981 and so shiny they could be newly minted? Her cellphone rings, and Detective Pete Marino tells her there’s been a homicide five minutes away. A high school music teacher has been shot with uncanny precision as he unloaded groceries from his car. No one has heard or seen a thing.

In this 22nd Scarpetta novel, the master forensic sleuth finds herself in the unsettling pursuit of a serial sniper who leaves no incriminating evidence except fragments of copper. The shots seem impossible, yet they are so perfect they cause instant death. The victims appear to have had nothing in common, and there is no pattern to indicate where the killer will strike next. First New Jersey, then Massachusetts, and then the murky depths off the coast of South Florida, where Scarpetta investigates a shipwreck, looking for answers that only she can discover and analyze. And it is there that she comes face to face with shocking evidence that implicates her techno genius niece, Lucy, Scarpetta’s own flesh and blood.

MY THOUGHTS/REVIEW:
Patricia Cornwell's newest thriller is FLESH AND BLOOD: A Scarpetta Novel. Fans of Kay Scarpetta will not be disappointed in this 22nd Scarpetta novel. In FLESH AND BLOOD, readers find the super detective celebrating her birthday and about to take off on holiday when a call comes in about a teacher being shot just five minutes from Kay. Of course, she becomes involved in what turns out to be a very difficult case involving a highly trained marksman. As Scarpetta's trip is postponed, some clues come in but don't seem to fit with the little evidence they have. A tweet was sent out minutes before the shooting, and a student confesses to the murder.

However, as the investigation in Cambridge goes on, Kay and her team find similar unsolved murders in New Jersey. The clever shooter leaves behind no clues behind except for some fragments of copper. The aim is so perfect that death occurs instantaneously. With no evidence to tie all the cases together, they realize they have a serial killer out there. He continues his rampage, and still the victims appear to have nothing in common. With no pattern, it also seems impossible to figure out where or when he will strike again.

True to her best-selling style, Patricia Cornwell has woven together a taut and exciting narrative. With the established team led by Kay Scarpetta, and newly introduced well-developed, intriguing characters, readers will be turning pages to see what happens next. Filled with many twists and turns, FLESH AND BLOOD looks like another winner. It is indeed part of Corwell's Scarpetta series but it stands well on its own so if you haven't read the previous books, never fear. You will, if I can guess correctly, be going back now to read more about this exciting character and the work of this fine author, Patricia Cornwell.

It's been a long time since I read a Dr. Kay Scarpetta thriller. This sounds like a good one (as usual). I wonder what Lucy has to do with it.
