SPECIAL EVENT: THE PRESIDENT'S SHADOW: A REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

A SPECIAL EVENT!

GIVEAWAY ENDED
THE PRESIDENT'S SHADOW
BY BRAD MELTZER

REMINDER ABOUT THE PRESIDENT'S SHADOW:
To most, it looks like Beecher White has an ordinary job. A young staffer with the National Archives in Washington, D.C., he's responsible for safekeeping the government's most important documents . . . and, sometimes, its most closely held secrets.

But there are a powerful few who know his other role. Beecher is a member of the Culper Ring, a 200-year-old secret society founded by George Washington and charged with protecting the Presidency.
Now the current occupant of the White House needs the Culper Ring's help. The alarming discovery of the buried arm has the President's team in a rightful panic. Who buried the arm? How did they get past White House security? And most important: What's the message hidden in the arm's closed fist? Indeed, the puzzle inside has a clear intended recipient, and it isn't the President. It's Beecher, himself.

Beecher's investigation will take him back to one of our country's greatest secrets and point him toward the long, carefully hidden truth about the most shocking history of all: family history.

If you ever get a chance to meet Brad and hear him speak, you must do it as he is the nicest, funniest author I think I have heard in a while. He also is super intelligent and knows so many interesting things and has done so many interesting things that we can only dream about. The picture was taken when Brad was in Dallas speaking and I got to meet him.

MY THOUGHTS/REVIEW OF THE PRESIDENT'S SHADOW:
If you aren't already a fan of Brad Meltzer from all his books, comics, television shows, and more, you will be after reading THE PRESIDENT'S SHADOW. Brad Meltzer is an author with a passion for uncovering the truth in history, especially when there is a chance that a mysterious conspiracy might be involved.

THE PRESIDENT'S SHADOW is the third thriller in Meltzer's Culper Ring series where once again, Beecher White is the central character. An unlikely protagonist, White is the national archivist in Washington, DC. and is puzzled when President Wallace calls on him for help. Usually at odds with the President, being asked to represent the Culper Ring comes as a shock to Beecher. The original Culper Ring's main objective was to protect the Presidency just like it did with George Washington during the Revolutionary War. With the President and his family suddenly targets of an unknown assailant, the Secret Service enlists Beecher because of his background and expertise. In an intricate and compelling coincidence (or is it?), Beecher White's father appears to be involved in this perplexing case.

White's search now takes on personal meaning as he traces his father's mysterious past. The narrative alternates between present and past as readers begin to see possible connections. The past reveals connections not only with White's father and a group of U. S. soldiers known as the Plankholders, but also a group known as the Golden Circle. How could all of this information from the past help to solve the danger hovering over the current U. S. Presidency? Would Beecher White discover his father to be involved with a conspiracy or would he take on the label of hero? How is the current danger to the presidency linked to the assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan's life?

As I listened to THE PRESIDENT'S SHADOW, I found it hard to turn off my audio book. Just when I thought I had things figured out, Meltzer would throw in yet another twist and I was back to listening to find out its connection to the stunning conclusion. Readers who enjoy not only a good mystery, but one based on fact and history, will find THE PRESIDENT'S SHADOW by Brad Meltzer to be just the right summer sizzler to keep one reading and turning pages, and then eagerly waiting for the next in the series to come out.

This sounds so fascinating because there really was a Culper Ring. Books like this make me want to read more about it in the history documents. It does sound so intriguing an I am very happy that it is a not a "page turner" but a disc "changer"! Thank you for your review, now I am even more interested in it!

Re-reading the June post about this story, I am wondering about the puzzle that is contained in the fist of the arm that was found. Why was it aimed at Beecher instead of the President? What is the shocking truth?

This is not the only secret that has been hidden since George Washington as I have read. But I am really wondering how the secret was kept? How did this secret society stay secret. It baffles me! It is a bit off the subject but I have an ancestor, a woman who was a double agent during the Revoltionary War. To this day, people still don't know which side she really favored. How do people do this???? How do they keep a secret when they die?

With the reveal of some kind of involvement of Beecher's father, will his father be a true hero or a danger to President Ronald Reagan? This is so mysterious!

I entered Hope: A Memoir of Survival in Cleveland. I am really interested in how the captured women kept their spirits up. Their situation is akin to a POW situation or human trafficking. What kept them going?

Glad I'm not the only one confused. I'd love to win this because the premise of a secret society is an intriguing one, but this poor old lady can't understand the directions, so maybe the book might be too much for me?

The concept is so intriguing. The Office of the President is far removed from most of us so this makes such an interesting story.

I've always kind of been in the dark about what goes on behind the scenes of our government and not thought much about it. I take a lot for granted freedom-wise. This Culper ring sounds interesting. Why is this arm there and why with a paper in its fist. And, why directed toward Beecher. So much to find out. If I had my druthers, I'd rather have the book but I could listen to the audiobook if need be.
