HOST
Read by George Guidall
BY ROBIN COOK

ABOUT THE AUDIO BOOK:
The explosive new thriller from New York Times–bestselling author and master of the medical thriller, Robin Cook.

Lynn Peirce, a fourth-year medical student at South Carolina’s Mason-Dixon University, thinks she has her life figured out. But when her otherwise healthy boyfriend, Carl, enters the hospital for routine surgery, her neatly ordered life is thrown into total chaos. Carl fails to return to consciousness after the procedure, and an MRI confirms brain death.

Devastated by Carl’s condition, Lynn searches for answers. Convinced there’s more to the story than what the authorities are willing to reveal, Lynn uses all her resources at Mason-Dixon—including her initially reluctant lab partner, Michael Pender—to hunt down evidence of medical error or malpractice.

What she uncovers, however, is far more disturbing. Hospitals associated with Middleton Healthcare, including the Mason-Dixon Medical Center, have unnervingly high rates of unexplained anesthetic complications and patients contracting serious and terminal illness in the wake of routine hospital admissions.

When Lynn and Michael begin to receive death threats, they know they’re into something bigger than either of them anticipated. They soon enter a desperate race against time for answers before shadowy forces behind Middleton Healthcare and their partner, Sidereal Pharmaceuticals, can put a stop to their efforts once and for all.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Robin Cook, M.D., is the author of more than thirty books and is credited with popularizing the medical thriller with his groundbreaking and wildly successful 1977 novel, Coma. He divides his time among Florida, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. Cook’s most recent bestselling novels include CellDeath Benefit, and Cure.

PRAISE FOR ROBIN COOK'S WORK:
“Engrossing…Cook does a good job of making the medicine intelligible.”—Publishers Weekly

“A witch’s brew of weird science and unbridled greed, Cook’s newest medical thriller will boost the blood pressure of anyone facing hospitalization.”
—Kirkus

“Rare is the writer who can take us into the fast-paced, miraculous, often bewildering world of modern medicine the way Robin Cook can. Cell is a superbly crafted, full-steam thriller, to be sure, but also a vivid lesson in just how momentous are the advances being made in medicine almost by the day—and how highly unsettling are some of the possible consequences."
—David McCullough, New York Times–bestselling author of The Greater Journey: Americans in Paris

“Robin Cook has been entertaining medical-thriller fans for decades, but he does much more with his latest novel, Cell…Cook has written a thought-provoking story."
—Associated Press

MY THOUGHTS/REVIEW:
It has been a while since I read a book by Robin Cook and I don't know why as I used to read them all. Listening to HOST, I remembered why I loved Cook's novels. Medical thrillers are a favorite of mine especially when you get involved in the characters as well as the exciting narrative. The main character in HOST is Lynn, a fourth year medical student at Mason-Dixon University Medical School. Lynn becomes involved in a special case when her boyfriend Carl goes in for what should have been routine surgery on his knee. With Lynn's recommendation, Carl has the surgery done at the hospital where she works. The result is catastrophic! Lynn and her fellow medical student and friend, Michael, are shocked when Carl comes out of surgery in a coma. With serious brain damage, Carl may not make it and if he does, the results would be life changing. Using their student privileges, as well as going above and beyond their rights, Lynn and Michael find out that Carl is not the first case to have gone terribly wrong due to problems with anesthesia. As the story goes on, the baffling plot becomes more involved and Lynn encounters dangerous and frightening situations with each twist and turn. The page turning mystery will hold your attention and most probably make you carefully question the next time you have to go to the hospital. I now will be waiting anxiously for the next Robin Cook mystery and be sure you get your copy of HOST for yourself...you won't be sorry!

The Host sounds like an exciting mystery set in the operating room where the patients don't seem to have a good chance of surviving a routine surgery. I am curious to solve the mystery.

Medical Thrillers are also a favorite of mine as well. Now I wonder deeply what going on inside that hospital and how many MRIs it might take to find the truth.

I read Robin Cook's first medical thriller and then about four others and then stopped. I checked the reviews and they were pro and con. One of them didn't like all the medical details. That is something that I love so I will try for.

From his webpage, I found a link to Robin Cook's FB page. I didn't realize that he had the high cost of medicine in this book. It was great to take a stand on an issue. He is asking for more Medical issues for his future books!

It has been years since I've read a Robin Cook thriller! This one is appealing for many reasons - knowing how much I enjoyed his early novels, this one being audio to listen when driving or doing chores, and the thrill of watching the med student search for the reason for her boyfriend's failed surgery as well as the reason for what is going on within the hospitals. jeaniedannheim (at) ymail (dot) com

Very surprised at the diversity of Mr. Cook's involvements - and enjoy that his earliest career fascination of archeology! But still looking at ways for folks to be healthy and fit. I have missed many of his thrillers!

Ever since I read Coma I have loved Robin Cook's books. I, too, stopped reading them for awhile. But, often I pick them up and always remember why I loved them. This sounds like I will be hooked on it. I love medical thrillers. So many years in hospitals make them like home.

I wasn't aware that Coma actually 'created the genre of the medical thriller, and changed the public's perception as well as the media's portrayal of medicine.'
