HOLIDAY VIDEO:
 ELF
STARRING WILL FARRELL

This holiday season, it is better to give than to receive! Stuff your stocking with the magical comedy Elf.This hilarious Christmas film tells the tale of a young orphan child who mistakenly crawls into Santa's bag of gifts on Christmas Eve and is transported back to the North Pole and raised as an elf. Years later Buddy learns he is not really an elf and goes on a journey to New York City to find his true identity.

With a box office take of more than $173 million, Elf debuted on DVD with gigantic special features including nine documentaries highlighted by a behind-the-scenes tag-along with Will Ferrell, the featurette “Film School for Kids” as well as separate commentaries with director Jon Favreau and Will Ferrell. “Buddy’s Adventure Game,” another feature for the whole family, offers four challenges that, when played and successfully navigated, allow the player access to a code that unlocks the secret “Elevator O’ Fun!”

Director: Jon Favreau
Cast: Will Ferrell, James Caan, Zooey Deschanel, Mary Steenburgen, Edward Asner, Bob Newhart
HOLIDAY AUDIO BOOK:
THE TREE NOBODY WANTED
A Christmas Story
BY TOM MCCANN
UNABRIDGED AUDIO BOOK
READ BY TOM MCCANN

The Year is 1946, a year after the end of World War II.

The place is Brooklyn—the poor side, the tough side: Brownsville.

The time is Christmas Eve. The Christmas tree sellers have turned off their lights and gone home. The lots are empty, except for a few forlorn trees that nobody wanted.

An eleven-year-old boy is sent out to pick through those trees and bring one back to the apartment where his Nanny has raised him since infancy. What follows is part fable, part remembrance, part miracle.

It’s a story of family values—even if “family”means a boy and his grandmother; a story of hope in hard times and great happiness growing from small things; a story of youth and age, rejuvenation and rebirth. It is a story of things that are not supposed to happen, but do. That’s part of the miracle.

Above all, it's a love story—of a special kind, and that is the other part of the miracle.

HOLIDAY PRINT BOOK:
THE TREE NOBODY WANTED
A Christmas Story
BY TOM MCCANN

"There are things poor people know that others do not. All kinds of things. The list is very long, and I don't know them all. But I do know some of them. One of the things poor people know is that at eight o-clock on Christmas Eve all over the world, the men who sell Christmas Trees simply walk off their rented spaces and begin their own Christmas celebrations. They just leave behind the unsold Christmas trees...."

Absolutely! "The Tree Nobody Wanted" would be a GREAT in either audio or printed form. The review reminded me of one Christmas back in the early 70s where money was extremely tight and we ended up going out to my uncle's farm and chopped down an old red cedar tree. You really had to be careful decorating the red cedar as the branches had sharp points, but after the family ornaments were adorned upon its branches it actually looked very much like a Christmas Tree. I guess I could say that it was our Christmas Tree that no one else wanted ... but it became our Christmas Tree that year and we adored the old red cedar tree.

I went to the website and read more about The Tree Nobody Wanted. After visiting the site, I would change my first preference to the audio version of the book. Hearing the author's voice, I could envision a group of people sitting and sipping a warm cup of cocoa or hot apple cider and listening to this story unfold. It takes approx 30-35 min. to listen to it

The one that I would pick is 'The Tree that Nobody Wanted'. I haven't heard of this one before. The part the author said that poor people knew is that at 8:00p.m. on Christmas Eve the sellers of the Christmas trees leave to go home and celebrate kindled a memory for me.
We had moved from Indiana to California in 1988 for my husband's new job. It was to be a whole month before the moving van would arrive. We hardly had money for food much less for a tree and of course no decorations. No presents either, we were in a bad shape. I waited until late on Christmas Eve and walked down the street where Santa, dressed in shorts was selling trees. I looked for a small tree. When I asked the price, it was much more than I could pay. Then I asked for a cheaper tree. Tears were forming in my eyes. Then Santa say, you can have this one for two dollars. We finally had a tree! My son and I walked home with it. I had found some red ribbons on sale earlier and we cut them and tied bows on the tree. That night we listened to Christmas music on the clock radio and looked at our pretty little tree.

I would like to win the audiobook of "The Tree Nobody Wanted". I love that time period and Brooklyn holds a special place in my heart. I so enjoy "feel-good" books.

From the Exeter Press website I learned that the author has received numerous letters about this book, most of which have commented about how "moved" and "inspired" people were by the story.

All of them-the video, the audio book and the book are great for Christmas. If I had to choose one I would choose Elf because I haven't seen it. I've heard it is a great Christmas movie. garrettsambo@aol.com
