STEVE JOBS
STEVE JOBS
BY WALTER ISAACSON
ABOUT THE BOOK:
Based on more than forty interviews with Jobs conducted over two years—as well as interviews with more than a hundred family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues—Walter Isaacson has written a riveting story of the roller-coaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing.
At a time when America is seeking ways to sustain its innovative edge, and when societies around the world are trying to build digital-age economies, Jobs stands as the ultimate icon of inventiveness and applied imagination. He knew that the best way to create value in the twenty-first century was to connect creativity with technology. He built a company where leaps of the imagination were combined with remarkable feats of engineering.
Although Jobs cooperated with this book, he asked for no control over what was written nor even the right to read it before it was published. He put nothing off-limits. He encouraged the people he knew to speak honestly. And Jobs speaks candidly, sometimes brutally so, about the people he worked with and competed against. His friends, foes, and colleagues provide an unvarnished view of the passions, perfectionism, obsessions, artistry, devilry, and compulsion for control that shaped his approach to business and the innovative products that resulted.
Driven by demons, Jobs could drive those around him to fury and despair. But his personality and products were interrelated, just as Apple's hardware and software tended to be, as if part of an integrated system. His tale is instructive and cautionary, filled with lessons about innovation, character, leadership, and values.
PRAISE & REVIEWS FOR STEVE JOBS:
[Jobs's] story calls for a book that is clear, elegant and concise enough to qualify as an iBio. Mr. Isaacson's Steve Jobs does its solid best to hit that target…[It] greatly admires its subject. But its most adulatory passages are not about people. Offering a combination of tech criticism and promotional hype, Mr. Isaacson describes the arrival of each new product right down to Mr. Jobs's theatrical introductions and the advertising campaigns. But if the individual bits of hoopla seem excessive, their cumulative effect is staggering. Here is an encyclopedic survey of all that Mr. Jobs accomplished, replete with the passion and excitement that it deserves.
--The New York Times - Janet Maslin
Isaacson's biography can be read in several ways. It is on the one hand a history of the most exciting time in the age of computers, when the machines first became personal and later, fashionable accessories. It is also a textbook study of the rise and fall and rise of Apple and the brutal clashes that destroyed friendships and careers. And it is a gadget lover's dream, with fabulous, inside accounts of how the Macintosh, iPod, iPhone and iPad came into being. But more than anything, Isaacson has crafted a biography of a complicated, peculiar personality—Jobs was charming, loathsome, lovable, obsessive, maddening—and the author shows how Jobs's character was instrumental in shaping some of the greatest technological innovations of our time.
--The Washington Post - Michael S. Rosenwald
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Walter Isaacson, the CEO of the Aspen Institute, has been chairman of CNN and the managing editor of Time magazine. He is the author of Benjamin Franklin: An American Life and of Kissinger: A Biography, and the coauthor of The Wise Men: Six Friends and the World They Made. He lives in Washington, D.C., with his wife and daughter.
MY THOUGHTS:
This is a book I bought myself to share with a reader. I have my own copy but bought an extra for one lucky person. I am so excited to read it. I believe Steve Jobs is a man who generations will look back on as we do the likes of Thomas Edison and say how he literally changed the world. Reading and hearing a lot about the book and the man before he died as well as before the book came out, I have no rose colored glasses about his being human....with good sides and bad as well. However, the impact and talent of Steve Jobs can't be denied, and with my son being in the field of computers in his work, I've known of Steve Jobs for a long time. Now to be able to know more details about the man, the power, the genius that is Steve Jobs, is sure to be fascinating. Some lucky winner will be, I hope, also very glad to get this prize!

About the book: I really like that the book was authorized by Jobs, but he didn't try to exert any control over its contents. That makes me respect him so much more.

This fellow is quite controversal, a very creative inventor on one hand and an emotionally immature guy on the other. I am very curious about him.

I'm so interested in knowing more about the duality of Steve Jobs's personality, that he could be charming, maddening, loathsome, and lovable.

I was surprised that he didn't know how to write code and he wasn't much of an engineer.
He definitely made sure that he did not have a boring life!

Checked out the site and liked how this book is presented as a cautionary tale!
Steve is one of those people that was born to innovate he reminds me so much of Thomas Edison ... absolutely brilliant! I would love to read more about this amazing man. The world lost a brilliant mind upon his passing.

i was very intrigued to find out so much about how he interacted with his family, he worked a lot and originally did not want children, and also found out later that he had a sister whom he let move in with the family.
