A SUMMER WESTIN MYSTERY
BY PAMELA BEASONMeet wildlife biologist and writer Summer "Sam" Westin, whose dream of saving the cougars is complicated when a boy vanishes from a campground in Utah...
A child has gone missing, and Sam Westin knows it's her fault. She nudged the boy down a dark path toward a man she presumed was his father. Now there's a media campaign targeting the cougars she helped rehabilitate and release a year ago, blaming them for the boy's disappearance. It's only when FBI Agent Chase Perez joins the case that human suspects are considered.
Clues lead Sam and Chase to the high country, where they comb the rocky canyons for evidence of the boy and for the one man who may be a vital witness. But as hours pass, and the media frenzy escalates, Sam fears they won't uncover the truth in time to save both the boy and the big cats...

AN EXCERPT FROM ENDANGERED:
It was almost time.
This was the man’s favorite hour. Dark enough that shadows obscured details, light enough that the campers had not yet gathered all their possessions. Food and utensils and toys and clothes and children were scattered everywhere. People were so careless. He wrapped his arms around his knees and drew himself into a tight ball. In a few moments, the sun would be completely obscured by the western escarpment. Down here in the valley, there was no gentle dimming into peaceful dusk. Instead, a wave of darkness slithered across the canyon, changing light to dark as if someone had closed a door. Campers would crowd into tight knots around their campfires or withdraw into their tents and RVs, fleeing the night as if it were dangerous. Then he’d be free to do what he’d come here for.
He perched in a U-shaped seat formed by two cottonwoods that had grown together. Nobody would notice him under the overhang of golden-leaved branches. Not here in the shadow of the cliffs. He listened to the noise from the campers in the valley, all too audible over the gurgle of the river.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
I have worked as a professional writer/editor and as a private investigator, as well as other jobs too tedious or weird to mention here. Southeastern Kansas is my birthplace. FROM THE BERKLEY PRIME CRIME NEWSLETTER:
Dear Reader,
My series character, Summer “Sam” Westin, is similarly challenged and experienced. She trained as a wildlife biologist but can’t find a scientific job, so she ekes out a living through writing about nature and outdoor adventures. With the help of her TV reporter boyfriend, Adam Steele, she lands a contract with a nonprofit conservation group to post internet reports about the recovering cougar population in Heritage National Monument. Having worked in the Utah park as a seasonal ranger one summer, Sam knows and loves its rugged canyons, plateaus, and wildlife.
Sam’s not too crazy about packing a laptop and camera along with her granola bars, but she’ll do anything to get back to the wilderness and the animals she loves. Her client is thrilled with her first post from the field. However, when two-year-old Zack Fischer vanishes from a park campground, Sam’s story and photo of the local cougars are used to hint that a big cat may have snatched the child. To add insult to injury, this suggestion originates in a television story by Adam Steele.
Vigilante hunters invade the park, the outraged public pressures the administration to shoot the “killer cougars,” and the search for the missing child loses momentum. Adam’s reputation skyrockets, while Sam’s hits rock bottom. Worst of all, Sam has good reason to believe that the real child snatcher is a man. She even handed the boy off to him, assuming he was Zack’s father.
The media spotlight is aimed in the wrong direction. The clock is ticking. Lives are at stake. What is most ENDANGERED in this story is the truth. Sam must battle a media blitz as well as nature’s fury in the backcountry to set the record straight before it’s too late for both the child and the big cats.
Pack your granola bars and lace up your hiking boots and join Sam and me on a nail-biting adventure in the wilderness. I hope you find ENDANGERED as interesting to read as it was to write.

From her blog, she wrote that she was invited to go snowshoeing in the moonlight. She thought that it would be nice to stay home warm and snug but she went any way and she was very glad that she did.
I agree with her, most of the time, is the right decision.

This book is just so timely for me---just recently a cougar was shot here in Minnesota because someone feared it--such a shame---so I want to read this book to see how she finds the child and convinces people that the cougar didn't "do it".

It does sound like a nail biter. Kind of reminds me of criminal minds. I love the suspense aspect.
