Mystery shopper Josie Marcus has been happily married to veterinarian Ted Scottsmeyer for months. But her newly wedded bliss is about to be cut short....

Josie and Ted have finally tied the knot, and they’re ready for the next step: buying a house. Ted’s business partner, Christine, has one she’s willing to sell, but it needs a lot of love. Luckily, the newlyweds are up for the challenge.

But when they tear down a rickety gazebo in the backyard, they find the body of Christine’s sister, a free spirit who supposedly took off six months before. The police arrest Christine for murder, leaving Ted to work overtime at the office to cover for his partner. With no time to work on the house or be with her husband, Josie will have to find the real killer quickly, before both her house and marriage are beyond repair.. 

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Elaine Viets, the author of four acclaimed mysteries for Dell and several works of nonfiction, is a board member of Mystery Writers of America and former president of the Florida chapter. She is also a board member of Sisters In Crime. A St. Louis native, Viets was a popular syndicated columnist for the St. Louis Post Dispatch and won several Emmys for her local "Viets Beat" TV show. She now lives with her husband of thirty-one years in Hollywood, Florida, where she collects speeding tickets and writes full time. She is also currently slaving away at Barnes & Noble for $6.75 an hour as research for her next Dead-End Job Mystery.

For her short stories recently, she's had "Death of a Condo Commando" published in Alfred Hitchcock in May, 2009, and "The Bedroom Door" was selected by blind judging for the Charlaine Harris MWA anthology, "CRIMES BY MOONLIGHT," out in April 2010.

AN EXCERPT FROM FIXING TO DIE:
CHAPTER ONE:
“Wait till you see the living room,” the real estate agent said. “It’s amazing.”

So far, Josie Marcus thought, the only amazing thing about this house was the paint color: Gray. Not a soft, sophisticated gray. Damp basement gray. Concrete gray.

Sally Redding Rutherford, the real estate agent, called the grim gray entrance hall “cozy.” Josie had looked at enough homes to translate real estate lingo. “Cozy” meant coffin sized. There was barely room for her and Sally in the entrance. Josie felt like she was stuck in an upright burial vault.

Sally struggled to turn this dismal introduction into a sales plus. “Gray is chic again.”

“It’s like being trapped in a permanent rainy day,” Josie said.
