FIELD OF PREY
READ BY RICHARD FERRONE
BY JOHN SANDFORD

ABOUT THE AUDIO BOOK:
The extraordinary new Lucas Davenport thriller from the #1 New York Times-bestselling author and Pulitzer Prize winner.

The night after the fourth of July, Layton Carlson Jr., of Red Wing, Minnesota, finally got lucky. And unlucky.

He’d picked the perfect spot to lose his virginity to his girlfriend, an abandoned farmyard in the middle of cornfields: nice, private, and quiet. The only problem was . . . something smelled bad—like, really bad. He mentioned it to a county deputy he knew, and when the cop took a look, he found a body stuffed down a cistern. And then another, and another.

By the time Lucas Davenport was called in, the police were up to fifteen bodies and counting. And as if that wasn’t bad enough, when Lucas began to investigate, he made some disturbing discoveries of his own. The victims had been killed over a great many years, one every summer, regular as clockwork. How could this have happened without anybody noticing?

Because one thing was for sure: the killer had to live close by. He was probably even someone they saw every day. . . .

PRAISE FOR FIELD OF PREY:
“One of [Sandford’s] best. His writing and the appeal of his lead character are as fresh as ever. This author is a master writer and he pulls out all the stops to tell the latest adventure . . . For those who think they know everything they need to know about Lucas Davenport, this book proves them wrong. It also shows that Sanford still has some tricks up his sleeve when it comes to writing totally engrossing books. Sanford has always been at the top of any list of great mystery writers and this latest book shows why…It is one of his best and that makes it something really special.”—Huffington Post

“Consistently brilliant, Sandford shows the methodical steps inherent in such a case, without sacrificing plot, pacing or character.”—Cleveland Plain-Dealer

“Sandford seems to top himself with each new installment; the latest is no exception to that rule . . . It doesn’t get any better than Field of Prey. . . This is a series you must be reading if you are not already.”—bookreporter.com

“As always, Lucas and Sandford are superb . . . Another top-notch thriller destined for best-seller lists.”—Booklist (starred review)

“Suspenseful . . . Sandford has tricks to play to confound readers before the tension rises and leads to a violent and surprising conclusion.”—Publishers Weekly

“Intense.”—Kirkus Reviews

MY THOUGHTS/REVIEW:
John Sandford’s latest bestseller from his “Prey Series”, FIELD OF PREY, was an exciting and entertaining read for the most part. John Sandford is known for the delicious characters he creates because they are smart and involved in well-conceived mysteries. This time around, however, I didn’t find them quite so top notch. I am usually blown away by Sandford’s work, but was a bit disappointed with FIELD OF PREY.

The plot line kept the story moving and the pages turning (or in my case, the audio book turned on). With all the twists and turns, it seemed harder to follow all of them and be as emotionally involved as I usually am with Sandford’s work. Having read most of the author’s books, I know that I will continue to read and enjoy one of my favorite mystery authors in the future. FIELD OF PREY may well be a book I tried to enjoy when too much was going on around me and just need to go back and listen again at some point. My guess is that others will agree with readers worldwide who are finding FIELD OF PREY to be another of John Sandford’s thrilling and engaging mysteries.

I'm intrigued by the premise that these terrible crimes were happening under the noses of everyone in the town.

This sounds like a really good story. Maybe it's one that comes across easier when read than on audio? I'd like to give it a listen still. His stories are great.
