THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN

ABOUT THE AUDIO BOOK:Read by Clare Corbett,
Louise Brealey, and India Fisher
A debut psychological thriller that will forever change the way you look at other people’s lives.
Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. “Jess and Jason,” she calls them. Their life—as she sees it—is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.
And then she sees something shocking. It’s only a minute until the train moves on, but it’s enough. Now everything’s changed. Unable to keep it to herself, Rachel offers what she knows to the police, and becomes inextricably entwined in what happens next, as well as in the lives of everyone involved. Has she done more harm than good?
Compulsively readable, The Girl on the Train is an emotionally immersive, Hitchcockian thriller and an electrifying debut.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Paula Hawkins worked as a journalist for fifteen years before turning her hand to fiction. She lives in London. The Girl on the Train is her first thriller. It is being published all over the world and has been optioned by Dreamworks.
PRAISE FOR THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN:
“The Girl on the Train has more fun with unreliable narration than any chiller since Gone Girl. . . . The Girl on the Train is liable to draw a large, bedazzled readership too. . . . The Girl on the Train is full of back-stabbing, none of it literal.”—Janet Maslin, The New York Times
“The Girl on the Train marries movie noir with novelistic trickery. . . hang on tight. You’ll be surprised by what horrors lurk around the bend.”—USA Today
“Like its train, the story blasts through the stagnation of these lives in suburban London and the reader cannot help but turn pages. . . . The welcome echoes of Rear Window throughout the story and its propulsive narrative make The Girl on the Train an absorbing read.”—The Boston Globe
“[The Girl on the Train] pulls off a thriller’s toughest trick: carefully assembling everything we think we know, until it reveals the one thing we didn’t see coming.”—Entertainment Weekly
“Gone Girl fans will devour this psychological thriller. . . . Hawkins’s debut ends with a twist that no one—least of all its victims—could have seen coming.”—People
MY THOUGHTS/REVIEW:
Paula Hawkins debut thriller, THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN, has jumped quickly on to the bestseller lists for a good reason; it is really a "gotcha" read that you can't put down. I will admit that upon first starting out, I wasn't quite sure where it was going or if I would like it, but something about the main characters just had me so interested that I had to see where it would go. I was really glad I did! Told through the voices of three women narrators, Hawkins weaves a tale that is as complicated at times as it is gripping.
The main protagonist is Rachel who is living on the edge as an almost homeless alcoholic ever since she and her husband Tom divorced. As Rachel rides the train into the job she used to work at each day, and home again each evening, she passes her old neighborhood and can see the home that was once the center of her world. But it is now inhabited by a new wife, Anna, an adorable baby girl, and her Tom. Rachel has no life as witnessed by her daily train rides to a job she no longer has and just wanders the city during the day so her roommate won’t find out she was fired. Her obsession with Tom leads to trouble with police as both Tom and Anna are driven to report her rather than constantly put up with Rachel’s bazaar claims and antics.
Down the block, Rachel also watches what she takes to be the ideal couple and she fabricates a life for them from what she sees, even calling them Jess and Jason. When Rachel sees Megan, aka Jess, with another man, she is in turmoil as to what to do to come to Jason’s aid! It only worsens when Rachel goes to the neighborhood to warn him and is then herself not only singled out by police, but by a danger far worse than her imagination can come up with.
With a narrative that twists and turns so much causing readers to think one more flashback and you might be worse off than confused Rachel. Unable to let it go, you will suddenly find that perhaps SOME things are more real than even Rachel might be thinking. Is she in danger? What of the other two women? Are they all somewhat responsible for what turns into a dizzying tale that leaves you wanting to read it all over again... to find the piece of the puzzle you are sure you missed along the way that concluded in the mystifying brilliance that is THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN.

Rachel reminds me some of a book that I recently reviewed, The New Me, the woman in that book kept driving by the house that she used to live in a seeing her former husband and his second wife and their cat. That woman is now living in a shabby apartment and they have an expensive large house. She seemed to be unable to move on after the divorce. A little deja vu!
