Some women are born with an instinct for knowing how things work
-and what to do when they break. Caroline MacAfee is a skilled carpenter, her daughter Jamie, a talented architect. Together they are the faces of Gut It!, a home renovation series on local public television. Caroline takes pride in her work, and in the way she connects with the show's audience. But when she is told the network wants her daughter to replace her as host-the day after Caroline's fifty-sixth birthday-she is devastated. The fallout couldn't come at a worse time.
For Jamie, life changes overnight when, soon after learning of the host shift, her father and his new wife die in a car accident that orphans their two-year-old son. Accustomed to organization and planning, she is now grappling with a toddler who misses his parents, a fiancé who doesn't want the child, a staggering new attraction, and a work challenge that, if botched, could undermine the future of both MacAfee Homes and Gut It!
For Caroline, hosting Gut It! is part of her identity. Facing its loss, she feels betrayed by her daughter and old in the eyes of the world. Her ex-husband's death thrusts her into the role of caregiver to his aging father. And then there's Dean, a long-time friend, whose efforts to seduce her awaken desires that have been dormant for so long that she feels foreign to herself.
Who am I? Both women ask, as the blueprints they've built their lives around suddenly need revising. While loyalties shift, decisions hover, and new relationships tempt, their challenge comes not only in remaking themselves, but in rebuilding their relationship with each other.

A lifelong New Englander, Delinsky earned a B.A. in psychology at Tufts University and an M.A. in sociology at Boston College. SOME OTHER BOOKS BY BARBARA DELINSKY:
MY THOUGHTS/REVIEW:
Barbara Delinsky once again proves why her fans, including me, love her books as you will see by reading BLUEPRINTS, her latest novel. By introducing readers to fully developed characters, BLUEPRINTS grabs your attention with a story of love and loss. It also revolves around the trending topic of women in the work place, and the problems they face at work as well as at home. When Caroline MacAffee turns 56, her "blueprint" for life suddenly changes. She is deemed too old for her job as a television network host on a home improvement show called "Gut It!". The program grew out of the family business of MacAfee Homes and so it is understandable when we see that Caroline's partner in all this is her 29 year-old, architect daughter, Jamie. Each in their own arena does a great job working together until Caroline gets the shocking news of being replaced.
This wasn't in the family plans and when the network wants Caroline to take over her mother's job, trouble naturally ensues. To make it even harder to take, the network gives Jamie the job of having to tell her mother about the change. Jamie's hesitation at telling Caroline, leads to even worse consequences in their relationship, as well as at work and for the family business. After all, how would anyone feel in this position? Given their close relationship and mother-daughter status, it is even harder to take for both sides.
Delinsky is a master of weaving intricate details into a story that evolves into dramatic changes, and when a death in the MacAfee family occurs, both Caroline and Jamie face major upheaval in their lives. However, their job change could just be the least of their worries now.
BLUEPRINTS is a family drama with concentration on power and competition that happens in all families. Readers will easily be able to relate and become engaged in this page turning story which should be yet another best seller for Barbara Delinsky.

Enjoyed reading the story of her bathroom remodel. We've done that . I was amazed she could get contractors at her house at 6:00 am. Our contractors didn't show until 9:00, but said they would be there at 7:00 :)

I love DIY shows, my favorite a husband and wife timw who help a couple or a single person pick out a house for lower than what they can afford, remodel it and have it be worth more than if they paid the full asking price. Oddly enough one of my pet birds gets really engrossed in the show too!
The family relationships are ever changing and it would be interesting to see how they cope with the aging ex-father in law.

I'd like to read it for all of the changes in the family, work and personal dynamics. So much hitting each of them at the same time. And, how can 56 be considered to old for something??? Not in my book.
