FEAR THE WORST: REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

GIVEAWAY IS OVER
FEAR THE WORST

BY
LINWOOD BARCLAY

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Your daughter doesn’t come home one night from her summer job. You go there looking for her. No one’s seen her. But it’s worse than that.

No one’s ever seen her. So where has she been going every day? And where is she now?

In Linwood Barclay’s riveting new thriller, an ordinary man’s desperate search for his daughter leads him into a dark world of corruption, exploitation, and murder. Tim Blake is about to learn that the people you think you know best are the ones harboring the biggest secrets.

The closer Tim comes to the truth, the closer he comes to every parent’s worst nightmare --- and the kind of evil only a parent’s love has a chance in hell of stopping.

MY REVIEW OF FEAR THE WORST

FEAR THE WORST was not at all what I expected. I guess the cover didn't attract me or something but as they say "you can't tell a book by its cover" was true here. It was an easy to read but hard to put down book. Indeed, it had many plot twists that weren't hard to see coming but when you have police that don't do their job right, and sub-plots that try and fool you, it is a pretty sure bet to see what is coming.

However I think the number one draw for me was Tim Blake, the main character who was written with great depth and realism. As an ordinary car salesman, divorced, and a fairly good parent, he lives a fairly routine life without too much anxiety other than normal every day things. Sidney is his 17 year old daughter who is with him for the summer and then he has to face his parental duties. When one day, Sydney doesn't come home from work, all that Tim discovers and experiences turn his normal dull life upside down and inside out.

Tim goes to the JUST IN TIME HOTEL in Connecticut where she was working (or so he thought) to inquire after her only to find out she had not been working there--ever! at all! Even the other workers there haven't heard of her. So where has she been all along and where does he start looking? It is now that Tim realizes he must find his daughter who was living in a world full of lies, and the clock is ticking.

When the police tell Tim that Sydney's car has been found, there is relief that is short lived as they tell him they found blood in the car. Tim confronts his former wife who has recently allowed not only her boyfriend but his son to move in. When Tim questions them, he finds the boy to be obnoxious and antagonistic. Whatever Tim is on to, although he isn't sure himself, the characters responsible for Sydney's disappearance get nervous and they come and go through his apartment so that when he returns it is an upside down mess. When the police find planted cocaine in the apartment, Tim is now a person of interest.

At work, when Tim takes a client out for a test drive, the "client" pulls a gun on him and the action really takes off at a fast pace! The setting in Connecticut is so well described that you feel like you know the area and that allows you to become immersed in this fast moving, can't put down thriller. There are plot twists and plenty of time you will hold your breath to see if Tim can get out of one more dangerous situation after another. I think this is a great summer read...or any time of year for that matter, as I couldn't put it down. I welcomed a book that drew me in and wouldn't let me read just one more page and then stop...I almost read it straight through if I didn't have an appointment I had to keep. Author Linwood Barclay does a superb job and I will look forward to reading more of his work in the future!

You said the magic words..."It was an easy to read but hard to put down book".

My favorite books are the ones you can't put down, even when you know you need to.

I have a teenage daughter, so I completely relate to parts of this story and can understand the fear of losing a child.

Please count me in.

I would like to win this book because after reading your post I realized what a foolish young girl I was. When I was a teen I would often tell my mom I was sleeping over a friend's house rather than tell her where I really was. The thing is I made up the friend. There would have been no way for my mom to check up on me or for her to receive a call looking for me. I thought I was so smart, because I would never be caught doing anything (not that I was doing anything really horrible but still). How horrible would it have been if something ever happened to me? The premise of this book is intense. Please enter me! :)

Thanks!

Kelly :)

Crud, I think I had better enter again, I didn't mention that I follow. Soooooo if you would prefer can you post this entry.

This is why I would like to win this book. When I read your post about Fear The Worst. It brought to my mind how when I was a teen, I use to tell my mom that I was sleeping over friend's home. Instead I was usually off somewhere else like a friend's home of whom my mom didn't approve. This friend that I used was made up. I did that so my mom would never get a call from the friend looking for me. I thought this would keep me from getting in trouble. It did. But imagine if something had happened to me? How horrible would that have been for my family and not to mention me? I am a huge fan of suspense, but this sounds like even more than that.

Please enter me, Karen. Please disregard the other entry and delete it if you don't mind, that way my following is noted like you asked. :)

Thanks! Kelly

This is definitely any parents worse fear, not being able to find their child. I have a son, and I was terrified that something would happen to him and even though he is now 25, I still worry about him. I would love to read the book

Reading the review the hair literally rose on the back of my neck. I could just feel the fear. I have a one and only daughter. I could easily see myself doing whatever it took to find out what happened to her. If she was hurt, I can guarantee someone would pay. Thanks for the opportunity! Indigo
