DOG GONE IT: CAT AND DOG DAY SPEEDY GIVEAWAY

GIVEAWAY ENDED!
DOG ON IT

A Chet and Bernie Mystery
BY SPENCER QUINN

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Meet Chet, the wise and lovable canine narrator of Dog on It, who works alongside Bernie, a down-on-his-luck private investigator. Chet might have flunked out of police school ("I'd been the best leaper in K-9 class, which had led to all the trouble in a way I couldn't remember exactly, although blood was involved"), but he's a detective through and through.

In this, their first adventure, Chet and Bernie investigate the disappearance of Madison, a teenage girl who may or may not have been kidnapped, but who has definitely gotten mixed up with some very unsavory characters. A well-behaved, gifted student, she didn't arrive home after school and her divorced mother is frantic. Bernie is quick to take the case -- something about a cash flow problem that Chet's not all that clear about -- and he's relieved, if vaguely suspicious, when Madison turns up unharmed with a story that doesn't add up. But when she disappears for a second time in a week, Bernie and Chet aren't taking any chances; they launch a full-blown investigation. Without a ransom demand, they're not convinced it's a kidnapping, but they are sure of one thing: something smells funny.

Their search for clues takes them into the desert to biker bars and other exotic locals, with Chet's highly trained nose leading the way. Both Chet and Bernie bring their own special skills to the hunt, one that puts each of them in peril. But even as the bad guys try to turn the tables, this duo is nothing if not resourceful, and the result is an uncommonly satisfying adventure.

With his doggy ways and his endearingly hardboiled voice, Chet is full of heart and occasionally prone to mischief. He is intensely loyal to Bernie, who, though distracted by issues that Chet has difficulty understanding -- like divorce, child custody, and other peculiar human concerns -- is enormously likable himself, in his flawed, all-too-human way.

Q&A with the mysterious SPENCER QUINN

Q.
What is your motto or maxim?
A. Still time to figure that out. I'll have it posted on my tombstone.

Q.
How would you describe your life in only 8 words?
A.
I wake up happy every day, but why?
Q. What is your motto or maxim?
A. Still time to figure that out. I'll have it posted on my tombstone.
Q. How would you describe perfect happiness?
A. I'll know it when I get there. I hope.
Q. What’s your greatest fear?
A. Not being able to help those I love.
Q. If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would you choose to be?
A. Right here - I love Cape Cod.
Q. With whom in history do you most identify?
A. Neanderthals - who knows why?
Q. What are your most overused words or phrases?
A. None, I hope. Can't anything be just right?
Q. What do you regret most?
A. No regrets.
Q. What is your greatest achievement?
A. Raising four happy kids.
Q. What’s your greatest flaw?
A. My volley, especially on the forehand side.
Q. What’s your best quality?
A. Probably for others to say, but maybe it's that I don't often lose my temper. On the other hand, loss of temper can be a useful tool, as I'm sure we've all seen, and therefore I'm somewhat handicapped.
Q. If you could be any person or thing, who or what would it be?
A. One of those mountain men who first saw the Rockies.
Q. What trait is most noticeable about you?
A. Again, probably for others to say, but maybe it's that I have my own take on just about everything; and again, as above, a double-edged thing.
Q. Who is your favorite fictional hero?
A. Jack Aubrey
Q. Who is your favorite fictional villain?
A. Raskolnikov - if you can call him a villain.
Q. If you could meet any historical character, who would it be and what would you say to him or her?

A. Human overpopulation.
Q. What is your favorite occupation, when you’re not writing?
A. Playing tennis.
Q. What’s your fantasy profession?

When I was little, my big sister had a maltese named Jimjesrie. I guess you could say it was a family name but not in the usual sense. The 'Jim' was for my dad, the 'jes' for my sister, and the 'rie' for my mom. I wasn't born yet when they got him so I didn't get a part in the name. lol.

My younger daughter used to have a weimaraner named Pilgrim. He was named that because he was rescued right around Thanksgiving. A beautiful and sweet dog but I'm afraid we had to give him away when we moved. It broke my daughter's heart.

I used to have a dog named Snickers. She got her name because she was marbled with all of the colors of a snickers candy bar and because she had a crooked mouth that made it look like she was snickering at you all the time. Snickers had a puppy that we named Mr. Mansy. The name came from the cartoon Bobby's World. Bobby's mom used to call him Mr. Mansy when he was in trouble. I wish that cartoon was still on. It was really cute. Thanks for the giveaway!
