IAN SHIVE ANSWERS YOUR QUESTIONS from THE NATIONAL PARKS GIVEAWAY

THE NATIONAL PARKS:
OUR AMERICAN LANDSCAPE

BY IAN SHIVE
foreword by THOMAS C. KIERNAN

When I interviewed photographer/author of THE NATIONAL PARKS: OUR AMERICAN LANDSCAPE, I asked readers who wanted to enter for the giveaway of his book if there was a question they would have asked. Many of you did, and Ian read your comments and picked a few to answer. So see if YOUR question is answered.

1.I'd love to know where else he would like to photograph that he hasnt' been to yet?

Ian Shive: I love the idea of spending time in India. Not only in the cities and towns but also their National Parks, such as Kazaranga. I think the colors, culture and food would make it a spectacular trip.

2. I would have asked him which of the National Parks was his favorite to photograph. Basic I know...but still.
thank you.

Ian Shive; I always say whichever national park I was in last is my favorite. Lately I've enjoyed spending time in the Channel Islands in California but I will always have a special place for Yellowstone National Park and Glacier in Montana.

3. I would ask him if he can ever take any quick photos just for fun, perhaps on vacation, without making sure the light is just right, the location is perfect, etc. His photos are beautiful!

Ian Shive: Great question! I do love taking photos including with my camera phone and yes, the lighting is bad and so are the photos but it's about having fun not just always having it "perfect."

4. One question I have is does Ian have a favorite national park? If so, which one and why?

Ian Shive (answer #): I always say whichever national park I was in last is my favorite. Lately I've enjoyed spending time in the Channel Islands in California but I will always have a special place for Yellowstone National Park and Glacier in Montana.

5. I didn't see an age that he actually started taking photographs. That would be good to ask.

Ian Shive: As the son of a photographer, I've been making black & white prints since I was old enough to see into the trays where I thought it was magic how an image could suddenly appear on a blank sheet of white paper. I first got very serious about it though in my college years.

6. If I were 30 years younger, I would ask if he is married.

Ian Shive: Thanks!

7. I would like to ask Ian what his most dangerous or challenging assignment was.

Ian Shive; The most challenging was by far climbing Mt. McKinley in Denali National Park, Alaska. It was cold, exhausting work and in a setting that could be dangerous. I was surrounded by great people though and a good team which turned it into a great lifetime experience.

Awww, thank you!
Yellowstone is my favorite place to be. Other than Honounou in Hawaii and Yellowstone is just a touch closer right now.

Great questions! I noticed he didn't say if he's married or not.
