YOUTH IN REVOLT
BY C. D. PAYNE
ABOUT THE BOOK:
The hilarious, take-no-prisoners novel about a cynical, sex-obsessed teenager's pining love for an intelligent girl– now a major motion picture from Dimension Films starring Michael Cera!
Theatrical Release:
SIX MONTHS IN THE LIFE OF THE WORLD'S MOST DANGEROUS TEENAGER
Youth in Revolt, the book, is the journals of Nick Twisp, California's most precocious diarist, whose ongoing struggles to make sense out of high school, deal with his divorced parents, and lose his virginity result in his transformation from an unassuming fourteen-year-old to a modern youth in open revolt. As his family splinters, worlds collide, and the police block all routes out of town, Nick must cope with economic deprivation, homelessness, the gulag of the public schools, a competitive type-A father, murderous canines, and an inconvenient hair trigger on his erectile response–all while vying ardently for the affections of the beauteous Sheeni Saunders, teenage goddess and ultimate intellectual goad.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
C. D. Payne is an America writer of absurdist fiction and is also the author of the novels Youth in Revolt, Civic Beauties, Cut to the Twisp, Frisco Pigeon Mambo, Young and Revolting, and Revoltingly Young, all of which he has successfully self-published. He lives in Sonoma County.
REVIEW:
The main character, Nick Twisp, is a 14-year-old teen living with his divorcee mother in the slum area of Oakland around 1993. As a teen who struggles constantly with his ever-changing body as well as his emotional life, he is portrayed humorously and fairly realistically . He doesn't get along well with his mother, and certainly has no respect for her boyfriend. Nick is at that point in his life where his physical urges are mostly uncontrollable, which the author uses to add great humor for the reader. He is a completely, outrageous young man who seems to be portrayed beyond any possible reality. However, saying that, he is completely convincing as a repressed genius, unsure about religion, has a sister who he has no contact with, and a father who is lazy, doesn't pay his child support and only cares about younger women. Of course, all this doesn't matter when Nick meets Sheeni Saunders near Ukiah at a lakeside trailer park. He is immediately smitten. The adventures that follow in pursuit of Sheeni are funny and you do find yourself laughing out loud quite a bit. Twisp's thoughts about life, sex, Sheeni, sex, his family, sex, how to get the girl, and yes, sex...get the picture?....portray this amusing young man so well and remind us of someone we probably have known in our own lifetime. I think younger readers will really find this book hilarious and older readers will chuckle at Nick's antics. Many may even be able to identify with Nick somewhat. I don't think VERY young readers should read this but if you are a parent, you will have to judge it according to your standards for your own child. For the most part, this was a good read for sheer enjoyment and would play well with high school students and adults because Nick's escapades are relateable for most people as well as fun.

I have seen several previews for the movie...and I didn't even know that there was a book. So I would love to read the book first. I am young (23), so I am thinking that I can probably relate, because 14 wasn't that long ago for me.
Thanks for the chance!

I have seen the trailer and the movie sounds very funny. I didn't realize it was based on a book. It would definitely be a book I'd save after reading it so I can pass it on to my kids in a few years!

I watched the trailer and the last scene with the car flying into the water was hilarious. I think I would like to read the book before watching the movie though.

Coming of age stories always attract me. It's so hard to figure out why people react the way they do. Parts of this story I'm sure will be so serious, others poignant, yet others really funny. I'd love to read this book.

I am not thrilled to see this one because Micheal Cera plays to same character in every movie. His acting has no dynamics. I would like to see where the idea for this movie came about!! please enter me

I thought your review was great and informative! I would want to win this for my niece, who is a teenager. I think it would make her laugh and she likes to read stories about teenage struggles. I am glad you said you wouldn't recommend this for younger kids, because I have some younger nieces. thanks! jacquecurl1(at)gmail(dot)com
