MOM STILL LIKES YOU BEST: REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

GIVEAWAY ENDED
MOM STILL LIKES YOU BEST:

The Unfinished Business Between Siblings
BY JANE ISAY

ABOUT THE BOOK:

The author of WALKING ON EGGSHELLS turns her wisdom to the sometimes heartbreaking but always meaningful bond between brothers and sisters --- a must-read for anyone blessed with the gift (or burden) of a sibling.

There’s a myth out there that good relations between brothers and sisters do not include conflict, annoyance, disagreement, or mixed feelings. Isay believes this is a destructive myth, one that makes people doubt the strength of the connection with their siblings. Brothers and sisters may love and hate, fight and forgive, but they never forget their early bonds.

Based on scores of interviews with brothers and sisters young and old, MOM STILL LIKES YOU BEST features real-life stories that show how differences caused by family feuds, marriages, distance, or ancient history can be overcome. The result is a vivid portrait of siblings, in love and war.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Jane Isay is the author of WALKING ON EGGSHELLS: Navigating the Delicate Relationship Between Adult Children and Parents, and has been an editor for over 40 years. She discovered Mary Pipher’s REVIVING OPHELIA and edited such nonfiction classics as PRAYING FOR SHEETROCK and FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS. She lives in New York City, not too far from her children and grandchildren. Visit her website, www.janeisay.com.

MY REVIEW:

In MOM STILL LIKES YOU THE BEST: The Unfinished Business Between Siblings” by Jane Isay, the author has written a book that deals with the situations that are all part of sibling relationships. From early on in one’s childhood when the second child appears on through to adulthood, there are a set of dynamics that take place and come to mean so much even much later. The relationship with one’s siblings where there is normally forms of conflict at a young age can last well into adulthood., When faced with shared situations later on in life like caring for aging parents or perhaps working out problems with a will or estate, these conflicts can come back to play an important role. Jane Isay uses stories and personal experiences, to try and help people to build stronger bonds with siblings.

Isay has divided her book into three easy to read parts. One is BEGINNINGS, then LIFE’S COURSE, and finally MAKING CHOICES. Using stories from very young siblings and then what happens in their adult years, provides many relatable stories for all of us, even if you are an only child. I found myself agreeing with so many of them and remembering myself having similar situations with my own older sister. Jane Isay interviewed so many siblings and provides all kinds of dynamics such as between two sisters or three brothers, etc. The book is easy to read and really practical and helpful. At the very least, it gives us all reason to pause and think about our sibling relationships as well as what we see going on with our own children and even grand children.

I remember my mother and her sisters (all in their 80's) arguing over who their mother liked the best -- their mother was still living then! Gran died at age 106.
Am an only child, and my two children still have tough feelings. Sigh. This book sounds very interesting.

I would love to read this. When I was growing up my mother was quite abusive to me, but not to my sister. My sister didn't want much to do with either me nor my mother until my mother inherited a large sum of money. Now my mother lives very near her and neither has much to do with me. I am okay with that, I don't need that in my life.

I have a older brother, who was very jealous of me when I came along. We just had a family reunion yesterday and we were just talking about that very thing and laughing about it.

I would love this book! I have one brother who is 6 years younger than me and we fought badly until we were both middle teenagers. Now we are both married and living in different cities, and I often wonder how close we really are. From the review it sounds like this book could be beneficial to me, and I could also pass it on to my brother to read as well!
Thanks,

I like that the author describes on her website that she came from a family of advice givers. Her mother was a PhD in Psychology, so I can imagine she grew up learning how to help people with their problems.

I have one brother who could not be more different from me. I always wondered how the same mother could raise such two different children. We are not very close and when I look at my mother and her sisters and see how close they are most times, I really wish my brother and I were closer.

On Jane's website I learned that she "headed out across the country, in person and on the phone, to hear the stories of brothers and sisters. Mom Still Likes You Best: The Unfinished Business between Siblings is the result." I bet that was fun and interesting! Not only does she have her personal experiences to share, sha also has people from all walks of life. Now I really want to win this book!
