October is National Adopt-A-Dog Month!
Ms. M, a rescued dog herself, and I are so thrilled to bring you a whole medley of books centered around our love for our faithful pets this fall.
THEY ARE:
- KATIE-UP AND DOWN THE HALL By Glenn Plaskin
- OOGY By Larry Levin
- GoD and DoG By Wendy Francisco
- DOG TAGS By David Rosenfelt
- HOW TO BE YOUR DOG'S BEST FRIEND By The Monks of New Skete
ONE LUCKY WINNER WILL WIN
THE SET OF ALL FIVE BOOKS!
And here is a little about each book:
A personal memoir by bestselling author and celebrity journalist Glenn Plaskin, KATIE is a moving story about a man who discovers the true meaning of family after adopting a cocker spaniel puppy. Through the magnetic personality of his mischievous dog, the author soon makes powerful connections with several of his down-the-hall neighbors in a high-rise located in the unique Battery Park City neighborhood of Lower Manhattan. First, Katie trots into the lives of Pearl and Arthur, a warm-hearted elderly couple just a few doors down from Glenn. Later, John, a single Dad, and his rambunctious young son, Ryan, also move in and are seduced by Katie's charms.
All of their lives are profoundly changed as they are transformed from neighbors to friends to family, with Pearl as matriarch. The motherless boy finds a "Granny"; his Dad inherits a mother, Glenn discovers a confidante. Set in New York City, we witness nearly sixteen years of antics and family adventures spanning Hollywood high times, bad health, accidents, blustery winters, even the terrors of 9/11. Through it all, the family clings to each other, sharing a deep bond that give each comfort, support and security.
Based upon a widely-read article in Family Circle, here is an unforgettable story about the love that makes a family-one that transcends the hard realities of time, tragedy, and inevitable loss.

OOGY
By Larry Levin
By Larry Levin
In the bestselling tradition of Rescuing Sprite comes the story of a puppy brought back from the brink of death, and the family he adopted.
In 2002, Larry Levin and his twin sons, Dan and Noah, took their terminally ill cat to the Ardmore Animal Hospital outside Philadelphia to have the beloved pet put to sleep. What would begin as a terrible day suddenly got brighter as the ugliest dog they had ever seen--one who was missing an ear and had half his face covered in scar tissue--ran up to them and captured their hearts. The dog had been used as bait for fighting dogs when he was just a few months old. He had been thrown in a cage and left to die until the police rescued him and the staff at Ardmore Animal Hospital saved his life. The Levins, whose sons are themselves adopted, were unable to resist Oogy's charms, and decided to take him home.
Heartwarming and redemptive, OOGY is the story of the people who were determined to rescue this dog against all odds, and of the family who took him home, named him "Oogy" (an affectionate derivative of ugly), and made him one of their own.

GoD and DoG
GOD AND DOG is a phenomenon. First appearing on YouTube, the video of Wendy Francisco's charming animated illustrations and moving song tells of the unconditional love of both God and Dog.
With over 2 million YouTube viewings to date, Francisco's story appeals to all ages, to animal enthusiasts, to people of religious persuasions, and especially to anyone who has been loved by a dog.
Now in book format, Wendy's touching narrative will be expanded on through additional lyrics, illustrations, photographs and some of the powerful mail that is continually being sent to Francisco.

DOG TAGS
A German Shepherd police dog witnesses a murder and if his owner--an Iraq war vet and former cop-turned-thief--is convicted of the crime, the dog could be put down. Few rival Andy Carpenter's affection for dogs, and he decides to represent the poor canine. As Andy struggles to convince a judge that this dog should be set free, he discovers that the dog and his owner have become involved unwittingly in a case of much greater proportions than the one they've been charged with. Andy will have to call upon the unique abilities of this ex-police dog to help solve the crime and prevent a catastrophic event from taking place.
HOW TO BE YOUR DOG'S BEST FRIEND
For nearly a quarter century, How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend has been the standard against which all other dog-training books have been measured. This new, expanded edition, with a fresh new design and new photographs throughout, preserves the best features of the original classic while bringing the book fully up-to-date. The result: the ultimate training manual for a new generation of dog owners - and, of course, for their canine best friends. The Monks of New Skete have achieved international renown as breeders of German shepherds and as outstanding trainers of dogs of all breeds.

I would really like the book, how to be your dog's best friend. I often take in rescues, esp. german shepards. They often have not had any training at all, I think this book would be great to get some advice from.

CarolNWong(at)aol(dot)com
'God and Dog' with the theme of unconditional love sounds like a great book to read to a kid and one that adults can learn from too.
CarolNWong(at)aol(dot)com
The "Dog Tags" book should a great book because it combines a crime investigation where the dog helps to discover the evidence of a crime that it was a part of.

Actually all the books sound absolutely great. I love dogs and we have two Chihuahuas, one we purchased as a puppy and the second one we adopted from an animal shelter. We named them Pepper and Millie. Pepper is the male dog we purchased as a puppy and he is 15 years old. Millie we adopted from an animal shelter. I am not sure how old Millie is, but our Vet thinks either 4 or 5. We are pretty sure that Millie was abused by her previous owners as it has taken almost a year now to gain her trust. Now that you know about our dogs my favorite books to read are books of mystery and suspense. So I would have to pick Dog Tags by David Rosenfelt as the book that if I win I would most likely read first. This is great contest and I really like your dog banner “Friends Forever.” I am a GFC follower.

This is the best giveaway EVER!! I just love dogs so much!!!
I've been dying to read Katie Up and Down the Hall because I really want to find out how Katie helped the neighbors connect.
stephaniet117 at yahoo dot com
I've also been dying to read Oogy because I think it is so touching that this dog was saved. I love his precious face on the cover and feel so sad that he was abused. :(
God and Dog sounds really cool since it originated from a Youtube video and I am a Youtube addict!
Dog Tags sounds so intriguing! David Rosenfelt is one of my mom's favorite authors, and my brother has a German Shepard puppy so this one sounds like it would be a huge hit for my whole family! Awesome!
How To Be Your Dog's Best Friend would be really useful because my dog is a bit naughty, and so are my brother's two puppies!! Especially cool that the monks breed German Shepard's and that is what one of my bro's puppies are. It would be a great help!

I think it's remarkable and speaks to the power of animals to connect with people that Katie in "Katie Up and Down the Hall" a cocker spaniel puppy brings together different building in the building she lives in and connects her owner with these people. Animals know what people need & want because they pay attention to the ones they love!

I am really interested in reading "Oogy" because despite being well, not the cutests dog in the shelter, he's the dog Larry Levin and his sons took home because he wanted them too and he's got personality. This story warms my heart and makes me cry because this poor dog, who had such a difficult time in life has finally found a family he deserves who deserve and lobe him!
I read New Tricks by David Rosenfelt and I'm excited that "Dog Tags" is another book he;s written about a crime fighter and dog owner and lover, Andy Carpenter. Dogs are front and central in Rosenfelt's books and I cannot wait to read how Andy saves the German Shephard who is in trouble and, I bet, finds him a great home!

David Rosenfelt fascinates me because he started the Tara Foundation in tribute to his Golden Retriever who died from cancer. Through the foundation he has saved & rescued thoudands of Golden Retrievers and other dogs. He only started writing after he became tired of working as an executive in the movie industry!

I think Wendy Francisco's view that God and Dog are very similar in outlook and personality is awesome. She says that both love her no matter what and both forgive - God is alwaysa around and here for us and so are our dogs, they see us and wag their tail.
Her parallels are fascinating and theought-provoking!

I do like how Katie Up and Down the Hall shows how animals can sometimes bring out the best in us. They can make us let down our guard and let others in.
All of my dogs have been rescue dogs, so, I really understand how they can change your life like in "Oogy".
I would love God and Dog because I love the fact that dogs offer you unconditional love. No matter what kind of day you've had at work...you walk in to the house and your four legged friend is always happy to see you. It is nice to see a book that captures that.

All of the books sound fantastic. Dog Tags sounds great, as it involves a police dog and a mystery to boot.

KATIE - I found it interesting that this little dog was the catalyst for bringing so many people together. And....the fact that it was free to run up and down the hall! :-)
BornajhawkATaolDOTcom
OOGY - It was interesting to learn that this little dog came to be a member of this family in what started out as a tragedy.
BornajhawkATaolDOTcom
GOD & DOG - I can't believe this started as a YouTube phenomenon! I had to go watch!
BornajhawkATaolDOTcom
DOG TAGS - I found it interesting that a dog is "being represented" by an actual lawyer. Too funny!

HOW TO BE YOUR DOG'S BEST FRIEND - I find it very interesting that Monks are internationally renown as breeders and trainers. Who knew????
BornajhawkATaolDOTcom
I found it interesting that the author of "Katie" interviewed so many famous people.

It's interesting that Oogy's owner is not only an author but an attorney and father of twins.

Katie - Up and Down The Hall is the unforgettable story about the love that makes a family-one that transcends the hard realities of time, tragedy, and inevitable loss. It is charming how one little dog could bring these people from neighbors to friends to family.

Oogy sounds like such a wonderful story. It seems that the ugliest dogs often make the best pets. Even the name is great when you realize that Oogy is probably a kid's way of saying Ugly. I think that it will be great reading material for those of us who love dogs.
Thank you,
Christine

I think that this will be a great topic - the unconditional love of both God and Dog. I never thought about putting the two together like that but it is true. I would like to see how this is put into words. God does love us unconditionally. I can see that this is also true in most dogs except for those dogs that are raised to be mean.
thank you,
Christine

Dog Tags is a book that I would really like to read. It is a crime novel which is the type that I really enjoy. It would be interesting to see how a dog could be defended in court and also aid in his own defense.

How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend seems like it should be a required read for all new dog owners. It is supposed to be the ultimate training manual for a new generation of dog owners. If a dog is trained from the beginning as well as treated with love, he/she will truly be your best friend.
Thank you,
Christine

Larry Levin was a lawyer who deep down inside had always wanted to write. Oogy not only increased his knowledge of how to write, the power of observation it demanded and the journey into recall it required illuminated and helped him to appreciate the intricacies of life that, on a daily basis, he took for granted.

I found it interesting that Katie found a way to bring a group of people together, just by being herself!

I really want to read Katie Up and Down the Hall. I love the idea that the dog helps his owner connect with his neighbors.

I have to read Oogy. I feel sorry for him because he was used in dog fighting, but he should be ok with his new family.

God and Dog. What a excellent idea. I haven't seen the utube video, but will take a look now that I know about it.

Dog Tags is about a German Shepard. I grew to love the breed when my sister-in-law had one named Zena. May she rest in peace.
