A woman acts as bait in an effort to track down her missing sister . . . and Anna’s visiting cousin Patti prowls New York’s dark streets, but won’t say why. All roads lead to the Kirkmore, a sinister apartment tower harboring a secret more horrifying than anyone could ever have imagined.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Evan Marshall is the author of both fiction and nonfiction books. He writes the popular Jane Stuart and Winky mysteries as well as the bestselling Marshall Plan series of writers' guides. His book The Eyes Have It is a popular guide to nonverbal communication. In addition to writing books, Evan has contributed articles on writing and publishing to Writer's Digest and other magazines. Evan is the president of the Evan Marshall Agency, a leading literary management firm. Prior to becoming an agent, he was a book editor. Born and raised in Massachusetts, Evan has a BA from Boston College. He and his wife, literary agent and consultant Martha Jewett, live with their two sons in Pine Brook, New Jersey.

MY REVIEW:
CITY IN SHADOW is the  fourth Hidden Manhattan mystery and has all the best of the others in the series. That is that this Evan Marshall novel is a riveting story made up of several plot lines even though it is not that long of a book. The main character is Anna Winthrop who works as a Department of Sanitation supervisor. A respectable job unless you are Anna, who is the daughter of a billionaire businessman who is anything but happy with her career choice. With siblings who are all professionals, Anna came out as a debutante and then gave it up to take this job. She started at the lowest level and worked her way up to supervisor.

The main plot has Anna, who is somewhat of a part time sleuth, investigating a sex trafficking ring. She finds out about this at the same time a very frightened woman leaves a note that says "HELP ME" right outside Anna's apartment in New York. The note is left on a truck that is parked by Anna’s apartment because she has sold an antique desk and two men from Little Odessa in Brooklyn are using the truck to transport it.

Anna’s boyfriend, Santos Reyes, a NYPD policeman, tries to talk Anna out of “playing detective“ but to no avail. Anna works with her neighbor from upstairs, Nettie, and they pretend to be maids to get inside a fancy Times Square apartment building where much of this trafficking is supposedly taking place.

Meanwhile, one of the other plots has Patti, who is Anna's cousin visiting from Cincinnati, sneaking around the area near Times Square and Hell's Kitchen, which is the same area where Anna lives as well works. Where that leads is just another part of this gripping mystery which will have readers turning pages to see what happens next. All plots meld and the story picks up speed as one twist leads to another turn. When you find out all the answers, the dilemma then becomes the wait for the next in this captivating series.

This novel sounds interesting because of the human trafficking. When I read the review I immediately thought of the movie “Taken” staring Liam Neeson where he plays the father of a daughter that was kidnapped because of human trafficking. I really enjoyed this movie and this novel sounds like a perfect mystery read as well.

Another thing that caught my eye in this review was the statement that Evan Marshall is the President of the Marshall Agency. I did some research and found out from the site Writers CafĂ© that this agency works with writers in several genres. The web site for Marshall Agency is: http://writeanovelfast.com/. For those of you that want to write your first best selling New York Times novel I found out that you can down load a free Evan’s ebook on Tips and Publishing your novel.

GREAT REVIEW and thanks for hosting this giveaway opportunity.

I think it is interesting, that the lead character chose to find what she wanted to do, and be able to stand up to her family. It sounds like a good mystery, I would love to read it.

I love mysterys and it will be even mor interesting because of the human trafficking elements. I read a very long interview of a victim in San Fransciso. She was from a poor family in China and was told that she could get a good job in San Fransciso but the job turned out to be prostitution. She had a very difficult time of getting out of it. Also, there was a report on the local news of people mislead that they could get better jobs here and that turned out to be long hours and a repetitive factory job. They were guarded at all times and were discovered when one brave soul broke free and asked for help. It is hard to believe this happens here but it does.

I checked on the books that Evan Marshall has written and have decided that I would like to put all of them on my wish list! This book is a part of a series with the same mystery solver, Ann Winthrop,a santitation supervisor. So, if I like 'City in the Shadow', I am bound to like
the other three in the series.
He has also written a set of cozy mysteries with the solver being a young mother who is a literary agent. In that set, her cat helps with the mysteris. Great try out the writings of an author I haven't read before.
