A LONELY DEATH
An Inspector Ian Rutledge Mystery
BY CHARLES TODD
ABOUT THE BOOK:
Scotland Yard detective Ian Rutledge returns to solve his most exciting and shocking case yet in this latest entry in the bestselling series hailed as "outstanding" by the New York Times Book Review

A breathtaking blend of psychological complexity, haunting atmosphere, compelling twists, and impressive detail, the novels in the Ian Rutledge mystery series have garnered their author widespread acclaim and numerous honors and awards. At the heart of the series is the compelling Scotland Yard detective inspector Ian Rutledge, a veteran of the Great War who understands all too well the darkness that lies within men's souls.

Now three men have been murdered in a Sussex village, and Scotland Yard has been called in. It's a baffling case. The victims are soldiers who survived the horrors of World War I only to meet a ghastly end in the quiet English countryside two years later. Each had been garroted, with small ID discs left in their mouths.

But even Scotland Yard's presence doesn't deter this vicious and clever killer. Shortly after Inspector Ian Rutledge arrives, a fourth soldier is found dead. With few clues to go on and the pressure building, Rutledge must gamble everything—his job, his reputation, and even his life—to find answers.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Charles and Caroline Todd are a mother-and-son writing team who live on the east coast of the United States. Caroline has a BA in English Literature and History, and a Masters in International Relations. Charles has a BA in Communication Studies with an emphasis on Business Management, and a culinary arts degree that means he can boil more than water. Caroline has been married (to the same man) for umpteen years, and Charles is divorced.

Charles and Caroline have a rich storytelling heritage. Both spent many evenings on the porch listening to their fathers and grandfathers reminisce. And a maternal grandmother told marvelous ghost stories. This tradition allows them to write with passion about events before their own time. And an uncle/great-uncle who served as a flyer in WWI aroused an early interest in the Great War.

Charles learned the rich history of Britain, including the legends of King Arthur, William Wallace, and other heroes, as a child. Books on Nelson and by Winston Churchill were always at hand. Their many trips to England gave them the opportunity to spend time in villages and the countryside, where there'a different viewpoint from that of the large cities. Their travels are at the heart of the series they began ten years ago.

Charles's love of history led him to a study of some of the wars that shape it: the American Civil War, WWI and WWII. He enjoys all things nautical, has an international collection of seashells, and has sailed most of his life. Golf is still a hobby that can be both friend and foe. And sports in general are enthusiasms. Charles had a career as a business consultant. This experience gave him an understanding of going to troubled places where no one was glad to see him arrive. This was excellent training for Rutledge's reception as he tries to find a killer in spite of local resistance. I know this may sound really silly, but what interests me most about Charles and Caroline Todd, are that they are a mother-and-son duo! I think that is so absolutely amazing! Also that their many travels together as a family shaped the many stories they would later come to write.

Also, the novel seems like it would be such a superb mystery novel - and I do love mystery novels so. Also, Ian Rutledge is one amazing character! :)

While reading through their bio "Author" section, I found out the interesting fact that both Caroline and Charles share a love for animals and that they (God Bless 'em) tend to take "rescues" in. I think that is SO endearing and sweet of them!

They also once had a pet lizard named Schnickelfritz. Hahaha. I think that's hilarious - I can't even BEGIN to pronounce THAT one!

Also, from amongst Charles Todd's "Fun Stuff" - what I liked best was the section on his writing tips, and amongst them, this jewel:

"Let your characters be themselves. If they’re no more than puppets of your imagination, they’ll never reach their full potential in a story. Listen to them and believe in them."

I could NOT AGREE MORE! When I write, I feel like my characters are not fiction, but real people. And when I portray them, I want to do justice to them. I loved Charles Todd's advice - the whole section was a delight to read.

What I found interesting on Charles Todd's website...Writing together is a challenge, and both enjoy giving the other a hard time. The famous quote is that in revenge, Charles crashes Caroline’s computer, and Caroline crashes his parties. lol

I have to admit that I have never heard of this author. But the series looks very interesting. The combination of Scotland Yard, a good mystery, and the WWI background is very intriguing. I would like to take a look at this series.

I love mystery and this one seems to be well thought out and richly developed. I really like that it is written by a mother and son team. My son and I used to sit at the typewriter (a long time ago before computers were handy)and write stories together on the summer vacations. We had so much fun just as I suspect this mother and son team did!

Historical fiction and a mystery - doesn't get much better that that! A fair number of writers set things in WW2, but WW1 is rarely used. Would love to read this!
